The first thing I noticed when upgrading to 25.04 (and then more recently, 25.04.1) is that many of my titles became very choppy on playback. The worst examples of this happen only sometimes, but what happens is playback would pause completely as it kdenlive encounters the next (apparently CPU-intensive?) title. It would eventually play it after some seconds of ‘pausing’ at this juncture. Those strange pauses only happen sometimes, but what I get with a fair degree of regularity is the very choppy title playback.
Sometimes my titles have PNG images showing with them, and sometimes not. Sometimes a ‘fix’ can be had by disabling one or the other, and other times not.
Before this I was using a different version two or three releases from the cutting-endge, and I had none of these problems.
I am using the appimage on MX Linux 23.5 x64
Intel i5-10500T, 64GB ram, 256GB SSD
FWIW, I’ve always found that titles can be relatively ‘expensive’ to render and sometimes struggle to play in realtime as cleanly as raw video clips with no effects can.
I’m not sure how much choice of fonts or other content might affect that, but I routinely have at least a transform effect (and sometimes others) applied to them in the timeline, so I’d always figured that had something to do with it.
I haven’t done a serious project with 25.04 yet to know if this has somehow got worse relative to what I’ve seen in the past - just noting I have seen this sort of thing before on a similarly spec’d machine with plenty of CPU and RAM.
There are definitely elements of caching and resource acquisition/bottlenecking going on which can make the apparent choppyness seem intermittent for anything that’s pushing the bounds of real-time rendering.
Thanks for that Ron. I’m using no Transform on these particular titles, but I’ve had major slowdowns when editing titles with some font effects on (Outline, for example), but that hasn’t changed from previous versions of kdenlive, so I’ve made it a point to add these effects last, just before exiting the editor, but never quite seen this level of choppy playback (as opposed to editing) of the titles.
I’d be interested to hear if others have experienced it, or is it just my particular project, which has seen use in several versions of kdenlive
