A couple questions. A blank transaction as seperator? External deposit. As in transfer or cash?

A couple questions. I’m starting a fresh new file for 2026.

1. How do I register an external transfer in without creating another account. It’s like if I got cash and deposited it.

2. What is the best way to insert a separator line in the register. KMM automatically inserts separator lines like “Last Month”, “Last year”, etc. I want a separator at the end of each month. I used to make a transaction at the end of a month with the payee filled with ************* and text like END Jan-2026. It is easily visible when I scroll through the file. I do have the problem of what to do with the category. Is there some better way to do this?

  1. By definition, transfers are between two accounts. Either you create that cash account in KMyMoney and create a transfer transaction, or just make it a plain cash deposit transaction, using the PAYEE to show where the money came from.

2a) You might file a “wishlist” bug to enhance the “Information Headesr” section of the Ledger configuration tab of the Configure KMyMoney dialog, Ledger screen. There is probably more than one way to do it, but adding a “Show header for every month” option which is enable only if the “Show group headers between transactions” is also enabled.

2b) I don’t think there are many options, and there are side effects.

  • There are very few transaction types which do not require a Category or Account. Add or Remove shares or Split shares in an Investment Account are the only ones I can think of right now.
  • For Asset or Liability accounts, you can do a transfer of $0, which adds the header to both accounts. However, I think it will show up in various transaction reports, unless explicitly excluded. You could also create a “dummy” category of “Header” but that would also show up in various reports.

Then simply enter it as such and assign it an income category of e.g. External income.

Please file a wishlist request for it. Any workaround using a transaction will have unwanted side effects, especially in reporting.
