"Also save your image as a Krita file" no longer shows up? Krita 5.2.2 on Kubuntu 24.04 LTS

I have no earthly idea how I triggered this, and would very much like to un-trigger it.

Normally, when saving a document with layers on Krita, if you select a file format that doesn’t have layers– like .PNG– it will ask, at the bottom of the options for setting file compression and the like, if you’d like to also save a version of the file as a Krita .KRA file. I work with vectors a lot, and often reuse prior projects while making new ones– these .KRA files are vital to my workflow.

The checkbox has vanished, but on only one of my two PCs– the other one retains the checkbox. Both are on the same version of Kubuntu and the same version of Krita. Getting this checkbox back is of high priority, and I am willing and able to go through reinstalling the entire goddang operating system for it if I have to (although I’d prefer not having to, of course).

Also, since I forgot to mention it:
Without the checkbox, it defaults to behaving as if the checkbox is unchecked. Which means it doesn’t create the .kra file, only the .png file. (And yes, I have already lost things because of this.)

when i save a file with more than one layer i get this dialog

krita 5.2.2

i would suggest reinstalling the application by whatever command line your distro affords.

for me it would be sudo apt reinstall krita

and reboot

Yes, that’s the dialogue I’m talking about; on the computer where it works correctly that shows up. On the computer where it works incorrectly, the “:white_check_mark: Also save your image as a Krita file.” at the bottom is completely absent.

Reinstalling now.

Reinstalled through the method skyfishgoo gave, and still get this. It’s like the app doesn’t realize that .png images don’t have layers or something

Also quickly tested and I get the same issue when saving to .jpg so it’s not just .png that’s the issue

Update:
Uninstalled the version of krita from apt (5.2.2) and installed the version that’s on snap (the dang 5.2.11 beta version).
5.2.11 didn’t have THIS issue but did have an entirely different issue (it wasn’t using Dolphin for file selection; this is a known issue The 'open images/save as' dialogue for Krita on KDE itself... needs work - #16 by Lunamann)

Uninstalled that and installed the flatpak version instead, which is… 5.2.14??? That ALSO has the issue from that other thread. Heck. But it also fixes the issue from THIS thread.

Finally, uninstalling that and installing the apt version brings back the issue from this thread and re-fixes the issue from that thread (given the solution to that thread’s issue was to install the apt version over snap or flatpak)

what happens if you type sudo apt autoremove right now without hitting y at the prompt?

also please try saving a .png or .jpg from a new user acct to see if the behavior persists.

sudo apt autoremove does roughly nothing.

Trying new user account now.

What.

And I say this with the force of a thousand suns.

The holy heck.

It works on new user account.

…Suddenly realized something that wasn’t a thing on the new user account:

The new user account used a brand-new file.

The old user account had been using, of course, an old file.

Opening up a DIFFERENT FILE– or creating a NEW FILE– also fixes the issue.

I am now completely lost.

Swapping back to new user account to open up this problem .kra file there and see what’s going on

Opened the problem .kra file on the new user account.

Saved it as .png

Checkbox missing.

So apparently I found the issue, some sort of corrupt file???

so what you have learned is that the installed software works as expected for both your user and a new user… that’s means it’s not your dot files that is causing the issue.

and now you have isolated the problem to just one .png file that behaves the same on both your user and a new user?

that strongly suggests a corrupted file, but how did it get corrupted is now the question.

seems like somewhere along the line of open image > save image as .kra > close krita > open .kra file is causing the save dialog to be suppressed.

could it be that it is being suppressed because you opened the image from an already saved .kra file?

it would make sense not to offer the option since you obviously have already done it.

or am i missing something?

I have no clue, given “opening an old .kra file, edit it a bunch, and save as .png with the checkbox checked” is basically my entire workflow, so that being the cause of the bug… really doesn’t feel like it can be the issue. It also hasn’t corrupted any of my other files, at least not that I’ve noticed.

Anyways, copying the actually-important layers from the corrupted .kra file and saving to a brand-new .kra file fixed the issue, given new files don’t have the issue and the rest of my portfolio also doesn’t have the issue. I have exactly zero clue how it triggered, though, so if it triggers again I’ll come back here I guess?
