After using plasma 6.5 for a few days I keep accidentally clicking the star instead of the trash can. I don’t need the star. Is there any way to move it to the be the first item in the row of icons or hide it?
I have a lot of experience using CopyQ - which lets me ‘star’ (or ‘pin’) items - also to drag them to other tabs.
I use CopyQ mostly, but I have used Klipper quite a bit; and it looks nicer on 6.5 than it did before.
It seems very well balanced to me - and I doubt if it’s trivial to add settings for which items are included…
Anyway, I’d suggest that it’s generally much better to use MetaV to pull up the clipboard and then use Arrow keys and DEL to remove single items…
That, or STAR what you want to keep, then use the Wipe icon to clear the rest.
Overall, though, I’d say (after messing with it for a few minutes whilst writing this) that if you’re mis-clicking these items, there’s an issue with your mouse, or your motor control, and you should perhaps look into adjusting the settings for your mouse speed and acceleration.
When mousing is difficult (and I generally hate using a mouse to click stupid little icons) then the keyboard is an outstanding tool.
I wouldn’t think that extra options to add or remove the star from the list - as it seems Klipper has been primarily designed for mouse, not keyboard, interaction and there are no shortcuts (as with CopyQ) for these actions.
I kind of agree, though as a heavy user of the star and a large-ish clipboard size, I was initially deleting items. But that stopped once I used it for a short time, maybe a few days. I can see people getting frustrated.
The icons used to move around just a little as lines moved to the top of the list, when just clicking the trash repeatedly, I think, or that is my perception. But since 6.5.1 possibly, I haven’t noticed it happening.
Then I would give CopyQ a run for it’s money - the tabs are essential for heavy clipboard use; I’m not sure that stars would cut it for more than one or two items, but tabs mean the ability to categorise collections… for example, a dozen Thai phrases I use to reply to customers in FB, today a new tab to help editing my Plasma clock.
Sadly, especially with Plasma 6.5, Klipper does look so much nicer… but it’s a bit too lightweight for heavy duty.
there was a whole thread on this topic, but by your description it does not sound like it turned out as planned
Thanks for the reply. As a KDE user for over 20 years I’m finding it difficult to learn the new trick of not clicking where I have been for most of if not all of those years.
In the thread you point me to I see that starfishgoo points out that stars on the left makes more sense than having them next to the trash can and suggests toggles to toggle functions on/off. At least three posts there recommend having options to adjust the UX. I certainly agree with having options. I was hoping I was missing something and there was a way to move the star.
yeah, that was me.
but i’m still using plasma 5 so i don’t know what they finally implemented w.r.t. this new feature.
if you are not seeing any settings under the config menu then they either haven’t gotten around to it yet, or they decided not to implement my suggestions (sad trombone)
i’ll wait to see what i end up with in kubuntu 26.04 when it comes out.
I already had looked at it in the past. It offers too much, really, for what I need.
I keep the “selection” buffer separate from the clipboard. So highlighted text is ephemeral and pasted with the middle mouse, while explicitly copied content is saved to klipper and accessed via ctrl-v or meta-v. My saved klipper content is constantly changing, and seldom stays the same for very long.
I’ve been doing this since at least the early KDE4 days, but likely since the end of KDE 3, so close to 20 years.
Bookmarks pretty much make it perfect for me.
I have no issues with the placement of the icon, but it probably is better to have it somewhere else than right next to the trash.
Yes, that was my first impression - but if you end up trying to ‘clear’ most of the history - the icon does jump around a bit if you click (hence why I would tend to go keyboard del for the job).
I did kept pressing F5 too — it doesn’t help, but you might find it refreshing.
Ok, I’ll get my coat…
