Baloo: huge index file

Defaulting to false would hinder the discoverability of the file indexing feature. However, given that now Dolphin supports ripgrep / ripgrep-all search, file indexing could be offered as an “advanced” feature rather than being the default.

It would be good to ask the user to configure this at the first login, for example in the Welcome Centre.

asking new users coming from windows if they they ever want to be able to find a file again is not a good introduction to linux

in my opinion.

finding files needs to be background, it needs to be transparent, and it needs to be intuitive.

finding files in linux is none of of that right now and it needs to be improved.

the distro that figures it out first will be the go to distro

Catfish, for sure.

Skyfish I would say.

I agree with some points said.

  • the default causes huge files
  • discoverability is possible with names only. Content is pretty awesome, but should be opt-in as it does not seem to work that well
  • “keep track of filenames” or “keep track of file contents too” would be a good page in plasma welcome

the default for kubuntu is baloo is off (file search) so no index files of any size are created ootb.

name search does not require baloo, tho it may take longer if there are lots files – only the contents require baloo and that is only opt-in AFTER activating baloo.

another opt-in that is available is hidden files (dot files) and this WILL cause large index files to be created, esp if you are not circumspect about which folders you choose to index.

and again, i think asking new users to make choices about ever finding a file again is not a good intro and will cause more anxiety than it will solve.

new users have enough to deal with moving from windows already… the linux experience should be as un-intimidating as possible.

Kubuntu changes defaults then. Fedora and NixOS have it on by default
