Behaviour of Meta + Tab

Hello,

I am using KDE Plasma 5.27.12 on Ubuntu, and I am having issues setting Meta + Tab as a “Walk through windows” keyboard shortcut.

The background story is that I want to have both Meta + Tab and Alt + Tab as shortcuts to switch between Windows, since I use this computer also with a USB-C dock, meaning that I alternate between the laptop keyboard and a standalone one (with a funny layout, since it’s a Kinesis).

When I try to add Meta + Tab this additional shortcut, I can only use it to switch between two of the windows (the last two ones used?) and the behavior is different from Alt + Tab (which works just fine).

This is what the configuration looks like:

In my understanding, Alt + Tab and Meta + Tab should do the same thing (walk to the next window).
Does anyone have any clue of what I can do to figure out what is going wrong?

Thanks!

I think you might have uncovered a hard-to-find bug there.

When you add an extra shortcut through that page, it overrides the shortcut set in Window Management → Task Switcher, causing one of the Walk Through Windows shortcuts to behave weirdly.

The right place for this to be set should be the shortcut page for Walk Through Windows Alternative (or the Window Management → Task Switcher → Alternative tab), and the Walk Through Windows shortcut page should either:

  • not allow for an alternative shortcut, or
  • allow for an alternative shortcut, but be smart and automatically set it to the Alternative version

This is worth reporting on https://bugs.kde.org

Thanks, got it! I wonder why there is an “alternative” entry at all? It’s quite confusing. I’ll open a bug.
