Black screen after Wayland login, 6.3.1 update

After the update to 6.3 and 6.3.1, everything seemed fine in the first reboot. After that if I login using Wayland (as I used to) I see the loading screen and then only black. I changed to TTY1 and reboot, then login to X11, and everything seems fine.

Hi - when that failed login occurs, are there any errors visible in the system journal, or crashes visible using coredumpctl?

Since you’re using AMD graphics:

  • Do you have any older kernels to be able to test against?
  • Any recent Mesa updates going along with those recent Plasma updates?

Hi, I was not able to find anything in the system journal nor the coredumpctl, regarding the black screen. However I found some error messages about my ICC profile while on X11. So I rolled back to 20250205, and removed my screen color profile, then updated to 20250220, and everything seemed fine, so I added again my ICC profile, and it has been working fine in Wayland.

May be it was the color profile or something between 20250219 and 20250220, don’t know. Thank you for your help. I think I can close this now.

Before you go, @fbm224, I am having what sounds like the same problem. Also no help from logs. I have tried many things, and some seemed to work but the problem then came back. It’s usually immediate, but can be delayed by minutes so several times I thought it was fixed but wasn’t.

What I found is that the updates I ran installed a new kernel, from 6.12.9-200.fc41.x86_64 to 6.12.11. Rebooting into 6.12.9 (using the grub boot menu) caused the problem to go away. Kernel versions 6.12.13 and now 6.12.15 still have the problem.

I tried deleting my color profiles, but that didn’t seem to make any difference for me. Perhaps these are unrelated problems, but in case things come back for you…

  • running kscreen-doctor --dpms off and then turning on the screen by pressing a key (or just running kscreen-doctor --dpms off; sleep 1; kscreen-doctor --dpms on) will bring back the dead screen, but it will die again after seconds to minutes. (I have an external monitor, which makes this much easier than blind typing but I eventually bound the command to a key.)
  • as noted, reverting to an earlier kernel seems to make the problem go away – but of course that’s not a sustainable fix.

I have yet to find a definitive fix or even (until you) anyone reporting a similar problem.

Operating System: Fedora Linux 41
KDE Plasma Version: 6.3.1
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.11.0
Qt Version: 6.8.2

Memory: 27.2 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: AMD Radeon 780M

System Version: A7

Then most likely is something in the kernel, I’m on 6.13.3-1 since the 20250220 upgrade.

There don’t seem to be any 6.13 kernels available for Fedora Workstation yet, even in testing. I appreciate the information: it will give me something to look forward to.

Alas, updating the kernel 6.13.4 does not appear to have resolved the problem. My issues must have a different cause.
