Brand new user needing help with a couple basic things

I have a 4K video file with audio track and need to reduce the file size to a minimum to meet a mailbox size limitation. I also want to strip off the audio track, which contains distracting background noise and doesn’t add anything to the video.

I found the long list of Transcode options by right-clicking the video file. I don’t know which one will result in the smallest file size. I am willing to give up some video quality to get a minimum file size. What is a good choice?

I could not find a way to delete the audio. I can right-click the audio tracks on the bottom of the kdenlive window and delete them, but when I transcode a clip the audio is still there. How do I simple remove all audio from a clip?

TIA

convert the file to a .gif

The transcode options each has an “Mb/s” number which is an estimate of the average “bandwidth” of the resulting file - if you choose that specific option. The lower the number is, the smaller the file will be.

You can estimate the size of the file that you will get by multiplying the duration of the file (in seconds) with the estimated bandwidth number, then dividing by 8 (“Mb/s” is “mega bits”, not bytes) - the result will be the estimated size in MB.

If none of the available options meet the requirement, you can add more options in the configuration.

Please note that most (or all) of the transcoding options will reduce the video resolution to under 4K - likely 1080p or worse - in this case “losing video quality” means losing most of the pixels. I’m not sure what limits you are trying to hit, but it seems unlikely that you’ll be able to send 4K video to an email mailbox, unless it is extremely short - in the order of a few seconds.

If you don’t want or need to make any edits (e.g. cuts, effects) just use Handbrake to reduce file size. You can have Handbrake export only video.

In the rendering dialog window select More Options and then untick Audio

For that I would always use a file share provider. opendesktop.org has shared folders, and an account (free!) comes with 5GB. Something to consider, @greenleaf.

Thanks all, you’ve given me some good things to try.
