Is there any way that Dolphin can easily filter by a file category such as videos or pictures? It is straightforward to filter by mp3 for music files but I have videos with different file extensions or types - mp4, mkv, avi, etc. So I really need to filter by all files that are videos.
For more advanced search KFind is recommended, Dolphin has a button to open it in the search menu, if it’s installed. There you can choose location, give a name with wildcards (I know at least * is supported) and then in the Contents tab you can select from the File type dropdown All Video/Images/Sounds, among some other options.
However, after a further look through the menus, if Baloo file indexing is installed/enabled, Search using: File Indexing can be selected in Dolphin, for those folders where Baloo indexing is set up, and that also has a File Type dropdown
you can sort the details list by file type or by file extension but not by mime type, which would be more to your question.
you might find it easier to use file -i * | grep image | sed -e “s/:.\*$//” to find all the file names of image files.
Ctrl3 should get the Details view, then make sure you enable column Type which will group by Type, so here we’ve got some Matroska, and also in the VIEW settings, you can sort by type too;
If this is some kind of media, or general Download folder, you can set it for current and sub-folders recursively without messing up all your other folders.
This works really well with Compact view (Ctrl2
Thank you morsmortium. I had to install baloo then learn how to use it but it works.
