I’ve been using Kate for years, and use snippets every day. Up until a couple of days ago I always used the snippet domain name (usually two letters) to activate the list of snippets in Kate. It worked as a type-ahead list so I could just type a few characters and then choose the snippet that I want.
That no longer works. I’m now using Fedora 40 and the behaviour is the same on both laptops. I know I can press Win+Space but the behaviour is quite different and a lot slower. Perhaps there’s a config change that I’ve missed? Perhaps Kate has undergone a change? Whatever it is, it is a major change to my workflow and slows me down a lot.
I’d love to hear any suggestions.
Hi! Can I ask which version of Kate you’re using? There had been a KDE Bugtracking System bug filed describing pretty much what you’re describing here: 495416 – Kate snippets suggestion missing in Plasma 6
And that led to the Kate developers working to figure out a way to balance keeping autocompletion, while also avoiding undesirable pop-up suggestions. That work was merged into the Kate code here: Fix snippets not working unless completion is hard invoked (!1644) · Merge requests · Utilities / Kate · GitLab and was released in Kate 24.12.0.
If you’re not already using version 24.12.0, could you try upgrading to that and seeing if the result is more of the behavior you were looking for?
Version 24.08.3
Sorry, I thought that went into the original report, but then I changed from Bug Report to Discussion and it got lost.
I’ll try an upgrade and see what happens. I do dnf update
every Monday.
thanks

I’ve just done dnf update and still on kate-24.08.3-1.fc40.x86_64
Do I need a different repo, perhaps?
Ah, I missed the Fedora version number there! I don’t know when Fedora 40 would be getting KDE Gear 24.12.0, as those new updates typically can be produced first for the most current version - Fedora 41 in this case.
In the meantime, I believe the Flatpak version could be tested as it’s definitely at version 24.12.0.
I wondered if that might be the case. Hopefully F40 will see updates very soon. We’re only a couple of days away from Christmas shutdown so I might wait until we come back and see how things look. If all also fails I’ll look at a flatpak, or s/40/41/g
Thanks for your help.
