Can somebody please explain power management and screen locking options?

The settings marked with red, I don’t understand what they do, when they do and how they work in combo.

I understand what “Lock screen automatically” does, and this works, I get screen lock after 1 minute of inactivity.

But what do the options marked with red do and how interpret them?

Does screen turn off after 1 minute? (this works) but which of the 2 options is responsible for this?

If it is “When locked: 1 minute” then what’s the purpose of the other option, if it’s the opposite then what the other option means.

And what does the option “Switch to power profile” do, when does that trigger?

the first two control when the display power is turned off:

the first timer is for inactivity so after 1 min of inactivity (no mouse or keyboard input) it will tell the monitor to power off.

the second timer is specific to the time after the screen locking has engaged (see separate settings > screen lock to control timers for that operation).

screen locking can be inhibited by certain apps or activities even tho there may not be any user input taking place (watching a long video).

in those cases you will likely see under the power management icon in the system tray a “hold” has been placed on sleep and/or screen locking so that the monitor will not shut off while you are watching a long video.

you would typically time your screen power off to be AFTER your machine has gone to sleep (see top timer on that page).

the profile switching lets you revert back to a specific preset upon wake, or to keep using the one you have selected from the power management widget in the system tray.

so you could have it switch back to eco mode each time the machine goes to sleep and then you would need to shift back into performance again if you had something intense to do.

Technically, that’s an oversight with how sleep works. It’s more designed with laptops in mind where it will switch depending on AC state.

Plus, there’s extra options where it’s more understandable when you’re on laptop / screen with controllable brightness. See how it looks below (notice the 3 tabs for AC, Battery and Low Battery):

I noticed this option works only if screen save is not set.

So it appears for the options, if screen saver is enabled then the second drop down counts but not first one and vice versa.

I though that which ever is lower will trigger but no, it depends on screen lock enablement.

they should both work but there is interaction with the separate screen lock timer so, it’s entirely possible to get them crossed up (esp since they are on separate settings pages).

if you set screen lock to 30min

then monitor off to 10 min and after screen lock to 1min

then the behavior should be:

monitor turns stays on until the screen lock kicks in and then 1min later the monitor turns off… otherwise it would turn off after 10min even if you were actively using they system.

however if you set it the other way so that the screen lock is set to 10 min

and the monitor off is set to 30 min and after screen lock to 1min

then if you were inactive but had an application open that was inhibiting screen lock, then it should still power off the monitor after 30 min due to now mouse or keyboard input (but it will not sleep or lock the screen)

otherwise the screen would lock after 10 min and the monitor would shut off 1 min later.

at least that’s how i understand it.
