I did not have this problem when I used older versions of KMM. The updated version 5.2.2-8119572, adds two entries increase/decrease for each downloaded transaction. (See image) This saving account opens with a few hundred dollars. I download an .ofx the end of month interest. They come in as decrease, and increase entries. There is no decrease. Only a small increase. (The bank paid in $2.02) How do I make these come in as only an increase?
Another problem, though the register for this shows a balance of $525.68 The Home page of that account shows a balance $0.00
The register seems to show a balance of $0.00. Where did you get $525.68. Please show the bottom of the ledger including the cleared and total balance. Are you sure you started from a good balance? Have you ever reconciled this account (although that should not matter?)
As far as why the two apparent entries per actual transaction, we have no way of knowing why the bank did that, but banks often do funny things with downloads (even OFX, but more likely with CSV.) I’d suggest calling the bank, but most likely they will say only that they do not support KMyMoney, and most likely the person you speak with will actually have no idea anyway.
If these are all small, monthly interest deposits, for example, you may just need to delete the decreases every time you do an import. I currently spend a ridiculous amount of time pre-processing almost all my downloaded csv files (both banking and investments because of the strange things the banks do. On top of that, the banks seem to change something in the csv format every few months.
(Note I am absolutely assuming that the change has been in the download files, not in KMM. If you can get different results with the same downloaded OFX in different versions of KMyMOney, let us know, as that probably should not happen.)
I no longer have other versions of KMM on my machine. And though there are aspects of it that I prefer, I often have to fight it. I need a simple software for single personal accounting. I’ll see if HomeBank works better for me though I feel the register layout is already inferior to KMM. Again, thanks for your help.
First, I suggest setting the ledger to show both post date (the date on which the download says the transaction occurred) and also the entry date (the date when the transaction was entered or imported into KMM.) In addition, try importing the latest OFX file into a newly created account, to see if perhaps there is something strange in the configuration for the existing account. (Apologies - I read the “online balance” at the bottom of the ledger as $25.86 instead of 525.86 - that was my bad.) Separately, if you run KMM from command line, it should output more details about each transaction being imported, which might (or might not) give some hint as to where the extra, negative transactions are coming from.
I created a test account and I imported correctly. I the did the import again into the correct account an it came in correctly with only numbers in the Increase column and the numbers are correct.
However, I deleted the transactions from the test account, but I still can’t delete it. There are no entries other than an “Online statement balance.” And I don’t know how to remove that?
I got the test file deleted. Everything seems to OK, but it’s obvious I don’t know what I’m doing. The problems started as I attempt to do a Year end separation and start a new year file as I used to do in Quicken. I know some people like to have multiple year transaction in the file, but I prefer separate year files.
Aha! I will now guess that your actions to attempt a year end separation likely caused your problems. The issue of starting a new file every year has been discussed numerous times, and there may even be a wishlist bug filed requesting that feature, although it is unlikely to be implemented. One bit of advice is that if you ever do something to your data you are not absolutely sure is correct, make an extra backup, and spend some time assuring that the results really do make sense, such as formally reconciling most/all accounts or at least confirming the balance does match an appropriate statement - either one the day before the new year starts or the first statement in the new year. You will also have to either adjust the opening balance of every account, or add an adjusting transaction which would be the sum of all transactions from the previous year you are going to delete. Further, my guess is that it won’t make any significant improvement in performance, and all reports can be done by year, so it’s not really necessary for reporting purposes. It’s certainly not explicitly wrong, but you have now seen at least some of the difficulties of trying to do so.
For specific questions from your previous response, the post and entry dates are columns in the ledger whose presence can be toggled by right clicking on any column header in the ledger. I’m not sure which data option you see in the Configuration dialog, but that is not about which dates are displayed in the ledger.
The “online statement balance” is created/updated for an account when you do an import from a file which contains an online balance, such as OFX. It should not prevent the deletion of the account, but since you have already managed to delete that test account, there is no point in trying to figure out what was blocking the deletion, unless you already figured it out yourself.
Do let us know if you still have any specific questions.
