Can't drag any folders or files to the desktop Fedora 42 with Plasma 6.4.1

Hi, I’ve just installed a fresh copy of Fedora 42 with Plasma 6.4.1 on VMWare Workstation VM.

Once I passed through three kernel related system failures (not a KDE problem, obviously, but…) I’m trying to copy some tar.gz files from an SFTP share and I can’t drag anything to the desktop. So created some empty folders and txt files on the desktop and still can’t drag and drop anything.

A green + appears and nothing happens. I can only drag files to folders, but only if I open the folders and drag the files into an open windows or if I hold Ctrl while dragging.

I know there is a new option in General settings to change the drag behavior but it should just work at the default settings, no?

When I change the option to “move if on the same device” then I can move files on the desktop into folders but still can’t drag anything from the NAS share.

What’s going on? Thanks.

I am seeing similar here on KDE neon and Plasma 6.4.2
I can drag a file to the desktop, and get the expected popup as desired to move/copy/etc, and it works.

If I try the same with a folder, nothing happens at all. I also can no longer move/copy files until I log out.

I can’t point to when this started, as I don’t keep files/dirs on my desktop.

Operating System: KDE neon User Edition
KDE Plasma Version: 6.4.2
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.15.0
Qt Version: 6.9.0
Kernel Version: 6.11.0-29-generic (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland

I can confirm this. I always use CTRL+C or CTRL+X to copy/move stuff so I never came across this. For me, it can be either a file or a folder. I am on

Operating System: Arch Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 6.4.2
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.15.0
Qt Version: 6.9.1

  • Dragging a file or a folder to the desktop does nothing unless CTRL or SHIFT is pressed to invoke a direct action instead of showing the drop context menu as usual. The drag source is irrelevant.
  • Dragging a file or a folder from the desktop is not a problem unless obviously the target is the desktop itself.

I can see messages like this repeatedly in journalctl --user -b 0:

Jul 09 13:49:56 ppocket-thinkpad plasmashell[11872]: cannot grab mouse: no event is currently being delivered

I am not sure if lines like this are related (I get this in between messages like the above one but just on occasion):

Jul 09 13:48:43 ppocket-thinkpad dolphin[17332]: qt.qpa.wayland: Creating a popup with a parent, QWidgetWindow(0x5584fd6bb110, name="Dolphin#1Window") which does not match the current topmost grabbing popup, QWidgetWindow(0x5584fddce550, name="DolphinContextMenuClassWindow") With some shell surface protocols, this is not allowed. The wayland QPA plugin is currently handling it by setting the parent to the topmost grabbing popup. Note, however, that this may cause positioning errors and popups closing unxpectedly. Please fix the transient parent of the popup.

Another observation:

  • Dragging a file or folder from something like Dolphin will show the correct Arrow + cursor. This is true for any target, including the desktop.
  • But dragging something from the Desktop will show the Move cursor whilst dragging to the desktop or something on the desktop. Dragging from desktop to Dolphin will switch to the correct Arrow + icon.

This feels like a regression which might have it’s origins in the recent changes to the drop action popup.

I can confirm the same situation as anonnetuser described. The green + icon appears, but nothing happens. I can’t drag a folder or file to the desktop or create a shortcut.

I swear I searched the bug list first, but didn’t find that one. Thanks!

So did I, but it came up in a different thread.

Strange, just tried it and it works. I am using Ublue Aurora 42 (based on Fedora Kinoite) with Plasma 6.4.2.

I tried it, and it worked. Quite a few times, even. Then I dragged a folder, which did not. Afterwards, it stopped working for files as well until I log out.

Thanks all for the feedback and confirmation that this is a known bug. I found more info on it on the web by now too. It’s discouraging and disheartening to see major bugs like this make it to the release.

As I said in another thread: Plasma is by far the nicest Linux DE but the bugs and the instability really ruin the experience for me.
