CD not detected in Elisa, Rhythmbox, or VLC

Elisa, Rhythmbox and VLC are all unable to read an audio CD.

I am running Kubuntu 24.04, and my CD is being mounted via an external USB CD drive.

Dolphin detects the CD as an external drive.

This problem does not occur on my other machine which is running Ubuntu 24.04. There, rhythmbox happily detects the CD and I can play it.

I’m guessing I need to change some configurations with my system, but I don’t know where to go. Please help!

This seems like an issue in the OS or its configuration moreso than an issue in any software made by KDE.

Maybe the device link is not automatically made. When I plug in my external cdrom, udev creates a symlink /dev/cdrom is created and points to /dev/sr0

If this does not work on your system, it’s likely a bug in kubuntus udev rules.

As a workaround, in VLC through the Menu Media → Open Disc you can select a different drive.
