Sorry if there’s already a topic about this, but I couldn’t find one. How could I go about changing the Trash icon? Most applications and tools allow us to change their icon natively in Plasma, but the Trash doesn’t. By the way, does anyone have an idea why this option is missing for the Trash?
I’ve wondered about this too! It’s a bit of a weird omission in the settings. One way to do it manually is to find your current icon theme folder (usually in ~/.local/share/icons/ or /usr/share/icons/) and swap out the user-trash.svg and user-trash-full.svg files with the ones you want. Just make sure to clear your icon cache afterward so the changes actually show up!
Hmmm hard to unpack this, I disagree that ‘most applications and tools allow us to change their icons’ - are you suggesting that ‘Trash’ is an application or tool?
The most straightforward way is to edit the icons directly - if in /usr/share/icons, then copy to ~/.local/share/icons.
Trash is a core desktop component - not a folder or application launcher… so it works differently.
Also, you didn’t clarify - but there are multiple issues in question here - you could have added a Trash widget to the desktop, whereby the icon changes (empty/full).. but with a Trash.desktop file (shortcut) it’s likely more buggy.
If you’re talking about the desktop trash icon, then the most straightforward way is to drag it from dolphin to the desktop.
Personally, I don’t care if the shortcut doesn’t show an empty or not empty icon. If I empty my trash…..it’s empty. Who cares about the state of trash anyway.
hi, welcome.
if you mean the trash can widget you can add to the desktop, then there is no configuration option to change the icon there.
perhaps there should be, but someone would need to work on that.
you can effect a change to the folder icon by following dzon and but that does not seem to have any effect on the widget icon.
the widget seems to use what your theme defines so for that you would need to change the icon file itself…
/usr/share/icons/breeze/places/48/user-trash-full
or you can try a different theme.
I was quite pleasantly surprised at the ‘state of trash’ in Plasma - I only see on icon, in my ‘places’ sidebar… a context click brings up settings.
I allocated 5% of my system disk, with removal after a week (up to you) and I never see much point in actually emptying it unless it actually gets full (which it did one time when I deleted a couple of video files last month).
But for sure, most of the time I don’t see it or think about it… it’s just a hole that I shove the trash in…
