Confused by intended workflow of application launcher cathegories

Hello,

A lot of the time the default way things are put into categories in all three of the plasma “start menu”
options make little sense to me. CAD applications get put into Graphics, the Electronics category has a very low resolution bright green icon, sometimes you’ll get just one app in a cathegory.

So I saw there’s an editor app (KMenuEdit) and I deleted the categories I didn’t find useful, made some custom ones, reassigned icons to them, all nice. Except! Turns out when you delete a category, and then you install an app that is in that category, it will just not be available in KMenuEdit? It will only be in “All Apps” and there’s no way to move it into your custom cathegory. A deleted category will never be recreated automatically, and so you can’t reach the icons under it.

So I wanted to ask, is this intended behavior? Am I just using it wrong? I’m used to being able to make custom folders myself, like in Gnome or Android launchers. Is this not a thing with KDE? How do others work with this?

you can cut and paste applications from one category to another or a custom category of your making

not certain about what happens to apps when you delete a category that has apps in it, if it lets you, i suspect they end up in lost and found or in the hidden category folder.

you can go to settings > configure > show hidden to find them.

for reference all the .desktop files that appear in the app menu can be found in these two directories

~/.local/share/applications/
/usr/share/applications/

They do not end up in lost@found.
Hidden might be it, I didn’t know about that one. Thank you

It is what I was looking for, thank you. Would be nice if it was more visible
