Hello, I have a strange issue. When my monitor goes to sleep, I get a constant sound every few seconds which is very similar to the sound of the power source being disconnected in Advanced Power management settings. I have disabled all the sounds there already and it hasn’t helped.
The same issue appears on the latest Neon and the latest snapshot of Opensuse Tumbleweed so it seems to be Plasma related and not distro specific.
I’d appreciate any help on where I can look to see what’s causing this.
Thank you so much
Hi - just one quick thought, has this issue been seen in other desktop environments (either other Linux ones like GNOME, Xfce, etc. or under Windows)? Wondering if it’s not even Plasma-related but hardware-related?
And one general troubleshooting step might be, if it happens every few seconds:
Let it happen
Wake your monitor back up / unlock your computer if needed
In a terminal (Konsole by default in KDE Plasma), try looking at the system ‘journal’ for the prior minute with the command: sudo journalctl --since=-1m
In the scrollable log file there, look for any event that’s occurring roughly as often as you’re hearing the noise - that should, hopefully, somehow indicate what’s triggering it
Hi, thanks for your reply and trying to help.
I ended up giving up and just switched to Debian 12 stable with an older version of Plasma and everything is working fine again. Hopefully it will work fine in Plasma 6 eventually for me too.
The only catch there as far as troubleshooting goes is that Debian 12 is also going to include significantly older versions of a lot of core system components that fit underneath what KDE Plasma includes, so what you experienced might be an issue with a recent version of some other system component (things like the Linux kernel, Pipewire, etc.).
If you do end up returning to a Linux distribution with more recent versions and the issue returns, or if it returns on the next upgrade of Debian, hopefully checking the system journals/logs can help narrow things down!
This appeared for me when KDE Plasma 6.2 arrived with Arch/Manjaro. I use a USB C connected portable 2nd screen. I have also migrated to Wayland back-end which finally works well. When the desktop power profile dims the screen then switches off both monitors the repetitive sound occurs. Though it seems to be the sound for HW connect/disconnect no messages are seen in dmesg log. I notice in Plasma 6.2 there has been an addition to show 2 brightness sliders under the brightness tray display. This is inconsistent and shows only 1 “Built in Screen” after 1 or 2 suspend resume cycles.
This new dual slider feature is maybe not very mature and is maybe the source of the problem. Reverting to kernel 6.11 from 6.12 which always shows only 1 slider, there is no repetitive sound. There is probably a service which provides this feature which is kernel dependent, though I have not yet identified the culprit?
The journal log has lines in blocks of 4 which may be relevant.
