Is there a way to customize the toolbar in the ‘Open file’ dialogue (eg in Kate) like we can customize the Dolphin toolbar? At least making it optionally follow the Dolphin toolbar would be good.
Eg instead of three buttons for different View modes, I prefer the intergraded Change View Mode button with the dropdown menu. Also, I remove the Go Up button.
you could just use dolphin and open the file from there, if you want those things.
the file picker is not dolphin, it just has some similar qt features… in my view it has all the options i would ever need from a file picker and i would not want the view options to be tucked behind an extra click.

Exactly. It’s a matter of preference. Some of us prefer decluttered interfaces, even if that means an extra click occasionally. KDE Plasma is known for its flexibility and configurability. Eg Dolphin allows customisation of the toolbar for a reason. And that also raises the issue of consistency across the environment.
there is a config button in the file picker, perhaps you can get what you want added to that.
but i would limit the request to only the most essential items since that menu will quickly become cluttered and i would not want the defaults to change and ppl (like me) are already used to them.

Is there a button for the customization of the toolbar buttons? I don’t see that.

I am asking for consistent Plasma customisability that will allow users to declutter, not more clutter.

I am not suggesting changing the defaults. If you don’t want to customise the toolbar, then don’t. All I am asking is that the customisability elsewhere in KDE Plasma should also be applied to the file picker, for consistency if nothing else. Tbh, being used to Plasma’s flexibility, I was surprised to see that one toolbar couldn’t be changed. It looks odd to me.
Thanks but there is nothing there to customize the toolbar unfortunately.
Comparing with mine, I can immediately see you have different toolbar buttons:
I would very much like to have the bookmarks button you have but I can’t add it. I would remove the zoom slider and replace the View buttons with the integrated one I have in Dolphin. I can’t do any of these.
Basically, I would make it look more like my Dolphin:
I never said I don’t get that submenu. The problem is we can’t add/remove buttons to that toolbar in a way similar to how we can customize the toolbar in Dolphin (as shown above). It has nothing to do with that submenu.
In other words, can I now add the bookmark and other buttons to the toolbar?
the other things suggested would appear here in this submenu as well
which is why i suggested you limit them to just what you need because that menu will become unwieldy if too many things are crammed in there.
you have to remember that you are just using an applet here… this is not dolphin—only a small subroutine also used by dolphin—so all the bells an whistles of dolphin are not available to it, necessarily.
Bookmarks-style functionality is central to my workflow and Bookmarks in Dolphin work well so far. Just in case, I have links to the same folders (and files, which Bookmarks don’t support) in a folder on the desktop
But something resets my mimeapps.list every few days, so I now keep backups, and occasionally Kate loses the last session. Very annoying but I can’t report any of this. I am on Debian Trixie, and my reports are now automatically rejected because a bug may have been fixed since Trixie was released.
my bookmarks were working fine, but since looking into your post here and another about okular in the last day or two, something happend and now they are gone.
i do keep notes but the directories were scatted thru my notes.. i’ve now collected all that into a single file i call dolphin_bookmarks so i don’t need to rely on the dolphin feature entirely (or at all now that i got burned).
