Digikam repeatedly "forgets" databases

Several times in recent weeks, digikam has started up with thumbnails but no full-size previews; after a few minutes, the thumbnails also vanish. It looks like digikam for some reason is fixing on my almost-empty pCloud Drive F: instead of on the P: drive of my Synology NAS.
Fortunately the photos (183000 of them, 860 GB) are safe in the NAS, but the only way I know to get digikam right again is via “Tools/Scan for new items”, even though I have backups of the databases (7.2GB for the thumbnails alone), but this re-scan takes about 5 hours. This strange behaviour began in 8.7 but has continued with a newly installed 8.8 (Windows 11, 64 bit). Does anyone have ideas on what might be wrong?

Here with digiKam version 8.7 running on a Linux system with the database and collections on local drives, I haven’t noticed your issues – 19000 photos in my collections and 1.5G database.

I map the network drives Music, Photo, Video on the NAS to the Windows drive letters M:, P:, and V:. I’ve noticed that sometimes when I get my “forgotten databases” problem the mapping for Photo is corrupted (but not for Music or Video), so not even Windows Explorer can access Photo. A reboot then usually sorts things out in a few minutes but I’ve still no idea what is cause and what is effect.
