For example, I would like the ability to move Remote to under Devices as I am used to the Windows File Explorer where Network is below This PC but I believe this isn’t possible on Dolphin.
I think it’s basically hard-coded into the application, and it’s nice to keep it leaner and less complicated - not sure how simple it would be to enter a setting, or allow drag-and -drop to change it… There are wishlists for customisation in the works… but I think lots of other tasks take precedence.
I guess a desire to allow us to customise it is okay, but “because that’s how Windows does it” is a weak justification and a step backward in terms of KDE’s own design coherence.
Your best bet is to reorder your bookmarks within the “Places” section to put your most-used remote locations front and center.
I could be wrong though - I frequently am.
Hi Ben, I agree with the “because that’s how Windows does it” being a weak justification, I probably shouldn’t have even mentioned the Windows File Explorer, I only meant it as the file explorer that I have used the most and Remote/Network is at the bottom there so that would be my personal justification for wanting to re-order sections on my install. Windows also doesn’t allow the order to be changed so it definitely isn’t an improvement in that regard.
Regardless, it’s a matter of opinion and is just something that struck me as odd when I tried to drag a section by it’s top text and expected it to move, but didn’t. No one’s wrong here ![]()
Using the bookmarks section to bookmark every listing in Devices and then Remote locations in that order and then hiding those sections could be a useful workaround but in my experience, listings in the Devices and Remote sections can’t directly be added to bookmarks as they don’t have ‘Add to Places’ in the context menu when right-clicking them like a regular folder does and trying to drag them there instead doesn’t work.
Haha well possibly - unless a developer chimes in with some reasoning it’s tough to know… but you’re right that it doesn’t quite seem to fit Plasma that you can’t unlock/drag/swap those categories.
I was just mentioning how I get around it. Sometimes things are only an issue because we thought of it, but this is a recurring theme.
much of this is already discussed in this thread.
but as far as i’m aware no “wish list” item has been filed with bugs.kde.org to get these features on the agenda.
