seems it is! stupid me. man get- / setfattr. never to old, to learn something “new”.

e.g. change PreviewsShown=false to PreviewsShown=true for a whole large set of directories,

Absolutely (using find + setfattr and some scripting), and dolphin has currently the “Adjust view style” that can be used to edit default view style of a hierarchy and will work the same way after.
