Hi,
I was using Synology DSM in KDE Plasma and noticed an interesting interaction between a web UI and the desktop.
That led me to a broader idea:
What if websites could explicitly expose individual interface components that users could extract from the browser and turn into persistent operating-system objects?
For example:
- Synology Drive → standalone desktop application
- Proxmox CPU graph → desktop widget
- event log → desktop panel
- chat conversation → separate window
- media controls → system panel
The important part is that the extracted component would still run inside the browser runtime and security sandbox.
The operating system would only grant explicitly approved capabilities such as:
- access to a selected directory;
- notifications;
- background execution;
- microphone or camera access.
So the basic principle is:
Remove the interface boundary between Web and OS while preserving the security boundary.
This is different from installing an entire website as a PWA. The idea is that individual parts of a web application could become first-class objects of the operating system.
I wrote the concept down here:
This is an early concept rather than a complete API proposal.
I would be especially interested in feedback from people familiar with Plasma, KWin, Wayland, browser integration, or related web-platform work.
