Fie Manager, Krusader root mode

I have posted this before but did not really get a workable answer; may now?

When I updated from Opensuse 15.6 to 16.0, also the new version of KDE plasma was installed. That is clearly to see by the new things on the right side in the task bar; e.g. the loudspeaker and the USB indicator have become smudgy unrecognisable signs. Why? Things were good, simple and very clear; why then go the Microsoft Senseless Version UI Renewal way?

I am digressing. I always run Dolphin and Krusader in root mode, and up to 15.6 I could call both directly, give my password and there they were. Not so in this new version combination. Dolphin and Krusader in user mode run as they should, but when I call File Manager and Krusader as root, things go differently. The root login screens come up, I login and then no file manager window. Both programs are running, as I can see in System Monitor, but there is no window. If I click again on their start icons, I am not asked for my password, another sign that indeed they are already running someplace. The only way to get them showing their windows is to first call Terminal as root and from inside there call Krusader or File Manager. There they are, right so as needed. Close the Terminal, then also the file managers get closed. Call again directly their root version: no windows, but yes, running.

Software updating has not brought any change. I can live with the diversive way, but I am just curious. Any comments? Is there any way to automate the full de-installation of this Plasma version and install the old one without again spending a few hours?

I’d suggest this isn’t a very bright idea… but to each their own.

I can’t remember ever needing to use either in root mode.

Thanks for your opinion. If you have to run several systems sequentially on one machine, sometimes they hinder each other in disk access rights. Annoyance in user mode, no problem as root and with good sanitary computer use. Served me well since my DOS days..

Nowadays the need for individually finding out why something does not go as expected is over, so my question. Do you have any factual contribution?

Dolphin doesn’t support running as root anymore. In fact I started using KDE recently enough that I can’t remember when it did.

But my workaround is just to use Thunar (from Xfce) instead of Dolphin when I want to be root.

It even runs as root under Wayland if I run it from this script:

#!/bin/sh
sudo /bin/env WAYLAND_DISPLAY="$XDG_RUNTIME_DIR/$WAYLAND_DISPLAY" XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/user/run/0 /usr/bin/thunar

That’s fine for me, but then again I don’t run a file manager as root very often anyway.

Thanks. Still, it is auto-installed in the start menu as File Mager Super User mode. ut it is typical that both don’t start with root.

No, but you can CtrlAlt⇧ShiftA to ‘act as administrator’ on my Plasma desktop - though OP mentions updating Opensuse without mentioning what ‘the new version of KDE plasma’ is.

There’s clearly a bug in that system, if indicators have become unrecognisable signs, specific to that system (a system that the OP states they ALWAYS RUN DOLPHIN AND KRUSADER in root mode).

Also confusing - ‘when I call file manager as root’ as a separate entity to Dolphin and Krusader.

Wow, just a lot of different file browsers running as root on the same desktop - seems very niche and strange to me.

I have used Dolphin for years - recently to clean up an issue in my fonts folder I used a context ‘root action’ and could just as easily have ‘acted as administrator’ but usually also find it simple to hit F4 to get Konsole to do stuff - so I guess I just don’t understand the thinking going on here.

The fact that you’re discussing ‘File Manager and Krusader’ as your file managers to be run as root leads me to think that you didn’t even install KDE Plasma, but installed Krusader on another desktop environment.

I came here to see whether someone had seen the same as I have, but I unexpectedly ran into a moral dogmatism here: if one runs a file manager as admin, one is a heretic and apparently there is, except niburgin, no-one who is interested to even touch the real issue or, as seems to be likely, has any idea/guess/suggestion about it. I don’t see any use for being back here.

Still, once more for those who did not get it:

  • the need for admin mode is because of the file mess that Win11, that regrettably is necessary for some things, leaves after exiting and shutting down.
  • Dolphin and Krusader in user mode do run nicely when started from the main menue.
  • admin modes of both File Manager (=super-Dolphin) and Krusader, started by clicking their items in the main menue, do not give their running window.
  • calling either FM or Krusader from the super user Terminal makes them run as they should
  • the old KDE in Opensuse 15.6 did not have this aberration; same machine, same use, same variance of operating systems.
  • and: “wow, just a lot…”. apparently it is supposed that I run them both at the same time? From what can that be concluded?
  • “the fact that…” You seem not to know, but a full installation of Opensuse (in my opinion the best for our production machines) comes with a full install of KDE Plasma
  • “the OP states they …” I am a singular “he”, as in “she/he”, not an afraid-to-misgender plural “they”.

This is just so confusing.

Isn’t it possible for you to open Dolphin and ‘Act as Administrator’ for the occasional time you feel that you need to do this?

‘I run several systems sequentially’ means that you have more than two operating systems on your machine - a wild guess means maybe Windows, MacOS and Linux, or possibly you’re expressing multiple Linux installs as ‘multiple Linux operating systems’ - but it’s a non-specific and confusing way to express it.

In the event of a poor Windows shutdown, then Windows should be used to clean that up - you’ll only make things worse by trying to fix these issues (i.e. possibly a ‘dirty shutdown’) by using Linux and running GUI file browsers as root.

It’s understandable to feel frustrated - there’s clearly a communication issue, people are struggling to understand your actual issue (beyond simply wanting to run multiple GUI file browsers as root)…

However, shifting to personal friction over simple pronouns is frustrating. I generally use ‘they’ to refer to someone whose gender I don’t know… If ‘someone’ walks into a shop, ‘they might buy something’ is perfectly normal in my opinion and always has been.

It does seem we’re talking past each other, and failing to even address any core issue.

This does remind me of a time when I started using Plasma some 9 years ago - when I had previously had the habit (in Linux Mint) to run Nemo as root to manage stuff, like installed wallpapers and fonts, before I was educated in my distribution forum as to why this is not a good idea; It also reminds me of a time when I installed Windows on a spare drive, but then had issues with problematic shutdowns and discovered that they should not be repaired using Linux, rather with Windows - so I’ll withdraw at this point.
