HDR weirdness/confusion, seeking clarification and next steps

I’ve finally decided to experiment with Proton and Wayland HDR instead of using Gamescope and got some strange behaviour as depicted below (with SDR comparison pics) where the HDR image looks thoroughly grey and washed out, sorry for my poor photography. Is this intended behaviour? What, if any, troubleshooting can I do? Should I file a bug report and if so, to whom?

Edit to add specs because I forgot until I read the reply, wups.
Operating System: Fedora Linux 44
KDE Plasma Version: 6.7.3
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.28.0
Qt Version: 6.11.1
Kernel Version: 7.1.4-204.fc44.x86_64 (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Graphics Processor: AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT

That has been happening to me for a long time. The use of DXVK_HDR=1 %command% actives HDR but the game is washed out.

PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 %command% don’t activate HDR.

My only way to have HDR is, how you said, gamescope -f -w 2560 -h 1440 --hdr-enabled --force-grab-cursor -- %command%.

Yeah, unfortunately this is how it is, but then we were told in this blog post “you might still see issues in some cases though - if you do, please make bug reports about it! Neither driver nor compositor developers can fix what they don’t know is broken.” So I’m here seeking to know if it’s broken or it’s user error/misunderstanding, or indeed if I’m asking the wrong people entirely in the wrong place entirely.

I’d like to know, really. A lot of time having to use gamescope in Steam to solve “something”.
