Help finding reason for stuck logout

I have this behavior on Wayland as well as on X11. When I try to log out through the launcher “Leave” > “Log out” on Wayland most open applications close, but not all (Teams for Linux, element-desktop, Plover, at least stay open) and the desktop background stays the way it is. I can then even still access the launcher and e.g. konsole starts up. However, Firefox does not restart if I try to launch it again.

If I have not clicked on “Log out” before, then clicking “Restart” does restart the system, but once I have clicked “Log out”, clicking “Restart” does nothing.

Also, the first time I click on “Log out” I get the count down display, but upon subsequent clicks that display does not get displayed again.

In X11 it’s slightly different: I get a black screen with a mouse cursor that I can still move and I can hit Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to get to a new login prompt.

With a fresh user this does not happen. I have already gone over all running processes and I was not able to find one that seems to inhibit logout.

I’ve also read about removing ~/.config/startkderc. I did not have that file but found some ~/.config/startupconfig* files. I’ve moved these, but that also did not resolve the issue.

I’m pretty sure the problem is somewhere in my config files, but I’d very much appreciate a pointer to some likely culprit…
