Help with KOrganizer after Kubuntu update

I updated Kubuntu to 26.04 LTS from 24.04 LTS. When I launch KOrganizer it complains that a necessary service is not available. There is a button for details which does nothing. A Start button comes up at some point to re-start the service, but it falls back to the beginning error screen again.

I ran KOrganizer command line and got:

akonadi is the service dying after the 26.04 bump for me

-akonadictl status
-systemctl --user status akonadi-server.service
-journalctl --user -u akonadi* -b --no-pager | tail -100

if start just dies:
-akonadictl stop
-rm -f ~/.local/share/akonadi/.pid ~/.local/share/akonadi/lock
-akonadictl start

also check the packages survived the upgrade:
-dpkg -l | rg -i ‘akonadi|kdepim-runtime’

Thanks for the response. This is what I see when I use the suggested commands.

I had to add a Snap package suggested by my system after trying that command the first time. Didn’t understand the rg part.

rg is ripgrep, kubuntu doesnt ship it. use grep:
-dpkg -l | grep -iE ‘akonadi|kdepim-runtime|mariadb|mysql’

the real fail in ur paste is mysql-global.conf missing, then akonadiserver exits.

-sudo apt install --reinstall akonadi-backend-mysql akonadi-server kdepim-runtime
-ls /usr/share/akonadi/mysql-global.conf /etc/xdg/akonadi/

your help is much appreciated on this forum and i think it’s a real benefit.

however sometimes ppl you are trying help get the wrong command syntax because you are not using the preformatted text option in the webUI editor.

this is what 'single quotes' look like in preformatted text

this is what ‘single quotes’ look like in regular formatted text

bash does not parse the latter.

alternatively if you just want to issue inline commands 'with single quotes', you can use the tilde character to turn the formatting on/off

it’s also much easier on the eyes to read commands and output in monospace font.

Good of you to look at all this.

I think it is strange that Kubuntu would kill KOrganizer in error, especially since looking through the alternatives in Discover doesn’t return anything useful so far as I can tell.

I did file a bug report with them. #526458 on the kde bugs web site

I do get something different when I replace the single quotes I have been copying with the same where I retype the single quotes.

One minor change after all this.

When I first launched KOrganizer it went immediately to the fail screen with the Details button that does nothing.

Now it start by showing an attempt to start the service before dropping to that fail screen.

The only good news is the calendar in Thunderbird still works and talks to my Nextcloud calendar. And of course my Nextcloud calendar still works. KOrganizer, when it worked, also did that and was basically my desktop viewer for calendar items.

packages are there now so the missing mysql-global.conf path is done.

next id reset the busted local db (nc/thunderbird still hold the real calendar):

I think I’m just going to have to live with KOrganizer being broken until the Kubuntu people decide it needs fixing. I can’t be the only one with this issue.

mysqld is still dying on that defaults file even tho ls sees it under /etc/xdg/akonadi/.

id try:
-ls -l /etc/xdg/akonadi/mysql-global.conf
-cat ~/.local/share/akonadi/mysql.conf
-tail -40 ~/.local/share/akonadi/db_data/mysql.err

26.04 apparmor has blocked mysqld reading that path for me before:
-sudo aa-status | grep -i mysql
-temp: sudo aa-complain usr.sbin.mysqld

or flip akonadi to sqlite so korganizer can come back while mysql is broken:
-akonadictl stop
-edit ~/.config/akonadi/akonadiserverrc and set Driver=QSQLITE3 under [General]
-akonadictl start
-akonadictl status

paste the mysql.err tail if u want to keep chasing mysql.

I tried your suggestions and KOrganizer is still being stubborn.

Thank you very much for all the checking you’ve done. I think I should stop here and simply wait to see if those in charge of KOrganizer will get around fixing what the latest LTS update to Kubuntu broke.

I took a look at the bug report I posted. There are many tickets assigned to the same person or group, so things may take a while.

That business also broke my VIrtualbox setup that I use quite often. I’m glad I was able to deal with that myself without too much effort. Re-install Virtualbox and add my virtual machines to the new version.

Thanks again.

Sadly it is quite common for Ubuntu based distributions to break KDE PIM, especially when using the MySQL backend.

Ubuntu itself ships AppArmor configuration that prevents normal users from running MySQL for some reason and the Kubuntu packagers for KDE PIM might not have adjusted their override rules accordingly.

I think some of these distributions have even give up on this whack-a-mole approach and are defaulting to the SQLite backend now.
I.e. on my last installation of KDE Neon I had to manually add the MySQL backend after base install and recover a working AppArmor config from another system.

This is out of the hands of the people working on KOrganizer and will need solving by Kubuntu people.

Switching to the SQLite backend as suggested by @nite_route might be faster, or checking on a Kubuntu support channel to see how others in the same situation have handled this.
