How about adding a shortcut to close tabs by pressing middle mouse button?

I’ve been used to press middle mouse to close browsers’ tabs.

And it doesn’t work in Konsole but works in Dolphin.

So I hope the developers can add this feature to next version of Konsole. Thank you!“”

hi, welcome.

you can can make this a feature request on bugs.kde.org by fling as a “whishlist” item under konsole.

if it’s not already there.

It pays to look at settings before you post…

This is a rare example where I don’t really see the need for this to be a setting, though. Closing tabs with middle-click has been the quasi-default for many years throughout user interfaces and there is no expected alternative action that would happen on middle-click. I feel people who don’t want to close tabs using middle-click will just… not middle-click the tab.

Ah, well this is an example where you have to dig just a little deeper than the surface…

On the surface it’s a compelling comment, but if you consider Konsole (which is a terminal emulator) you’re wrong.

In Konsole, middle-click paste is more of a thing - and that’s a core decades old unix behaviour which we don’t want to change.

So if you middle click on a tab, what happens? paste text into that terminal or tab closes? If you don’t know the answer, what would you then think might be the case?

So there’s a setting for that… but there’s a hidden issue here, because it could lead to accidental closes.

Something I’ve learned in this forum is that many people have what I consider to be absolutely terrible skills in using mouse and keyboards.

Things completely trivial to me seem to be really big problems to them (like not dragging tabs off your browser when you just click them… some folks insist on ‘drive-by clicking’ and complain it often drags things).

Then you might have a dodgy touchpad - I hate those things, maybe the middle-click emulation is a bit dodgy… So then you need a setting to disable it.

I like your argument, you do sound like me - often arguing very confidently and fairly reasonable way… but the setting is definitely there for a good reason

Be default, Konsole has those ugly [×] close buttons on tabs - for sure they should be banned :stuck_out_tongue: but you know - people like the challenge of aiming at them and click them instead of using an instant keyboard shortcut or a quick middle-click.

And yes, I just looked - and it’s actually off by default - I can’t remember how long ago I discovered and enabled that… possibly when I was setting up mouse gestures to close tabs on X11 some 8 years ago IDK.

Well, in my opinion you can stop right there, because if the checkbox is disabled absolutely nothing will happen. The pasting of text only happens when middle clicking into the actual terminal area, which is also how I would expect it. So I really don’t understand where the issue would be with changing the behavior for once.

Yup, well I can’t think of a better argument in favour - I just think that’s maybe how it was thought out originally…
