How do I debug plasma crash?

Background: I’m running an up to date Fedora 40 system. It starts up in text mode. I login and run startx. I have it set up this way because in the past I’ve had GPU driver issues, and if the computer is set to start up in graphical mode then it’s useless.

My current problem is that when I wake up from suspend about 25% of the time plasma doesn’t recover. I’m left with the windows that were on the last virtual desktop I had up before suspend. There is no background, just black. No panels. Right clicking on the black does nothing. Nothing helpful appears in Xorg.0.log, nor /var/log/messages. I’m forced to hit Cntrl+Alt+Backspace to kill X and start again.

So my question is: how can I debug this? Right now I have no information to put in a bug report.

This sounds like a couple of bug reports I’ve seen recently:

All on X11; we haven’t gotten any reports of this affecting the Wayland session yet.
