How to change size icons just in one folder?

Seems really impossible… if I try ctrl plus zoom, it changes it everywhere. I tried to change Settings → Configure Dolphin → General → Behavior → Check “Remember view properties for each folder” but nothing… And if i change from the configuration, view it does it everywhere… I have the last version.

you need to toggle it.

so if you want details to be the default then set the view to details and change the setting to “use this everywhere”

then navigate to a folder you want to make different, and go back into the setting and change it to “remember setting for each folder” … now you can change the setting and it will only affect that folder, but all the others will be in details mode.

I hate that this works just with detailed mode… makes no sense at all. I hope KDE is going to make this possible even if I have everything in icon view.

i just used details as an example because that’s what i generally use as the default view, but i think the same process would work for any of the views.

set it to icon view, toggle the setting to use this view everywhere, navigate to where you want a different view, toggle it back to “remember” and change the view… it should stick.

you will get a .directory file in the folder which you can see if you have show hidden turned on.

I think this can a good workaround for some users only.
In this way, however, you need to choose one of the view modes “Compact” or “Details” to mimick “Icons” mode with a different size, and then you have practically 2 “Icons” view mode plus only one other view mode.
However, OP is actually suggesting a new feature so that Dolphin can remember more settings, including icon size, for each window when “Remember display style for each folder” option is enabled.
So, this topic might be more fitting o “Brainstorm” category.

Yes, absurd to use ctrl zoom and this works everywhere even with “remember setting for each folder”… extremely not intuitive.

In my folder with pdfs I love to see them big (because of the preview function), but in other folders I want small icons. I think it should be something easier to set than now (so difficult that few people are implementing it I bet).

i’ve moved it to brainstorm to capture the discussion

i’m on plasma 5 so maybe this a regression in some of your plasma 6 instances, but when my settings are set to “remember” i can adjust the icon size separately in each folder…. not an issue.

if you have a default icon view and icon size then you still need to set it as the default by using the “make all folders like this one” option in settings, then you can deviate from that default with each folder by changing the setting back to “remember”

is this not everyone’s experience?

I use KDE Plasma 6.5.2 under Debian 14 now. My Dolphin settings for this is “Remember display style for each folder” but this setting doesn’t include the icon size set via View > Icons or directly by zooming in the current window, which changes the icon size everywhere, except those that might be already open, but those folders are also displayed with the new icon size when refreshed re-opened.
I think this will a new feature if developers agree to include the icon size in “display style”.

Saving zoom level is a bit ambiguous:

  • say you have a set zoom level
  • you switch to a folder with a different custom zoom level set, it is used
  • you switch to a folder without a zoom level set

What is the zoom level the second folder should have ?

I have PreviewSize=96 under [IconsMode] in ~/.config/dolphinrc.
This normally applies to all folders opened in Dolphin.
Isn’t it possible to add a specific preview size for a folder, like other folder-specific settings, while applying the global setting elsewhere?

It is not currently possible.

As I said this would be ambiguous How to change size icons just in one folder? - #10 by meven

Also this would conflict with the zoom level adapting to the preview state on/off or zoom level per-view-mode.

The per-folder view settings are going through some refactoring so this isn’t a great time to change this.

I know it’s not possible at the moment. I was just querying if this can be made possible. But your last sentence explains it all. Maybe this can be considered in the future…

I think we had a feature request in the past for it, feel free to open one in bugs.kde.org this conversation will disappear, bugs/features requests don’t.

I joined and supported this bug report, essentially making a feature request: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=169405

There has been a lot of duplicates and comments.

So this definitely needs to be looked at.

But other stuff to do ATM.
Contribution welcome (although the code change will be quite involved).
