On Icons-Only Task Manager, I can’t drag a running app’s icon in between my pinned icons. Pinned apps and running-but-not-pinned apps seem to be kept as two separate lists internally, and dragging only works within each list, not across them. The regular Task Manager widget has a “Keep Launchers Separate” checkbox that controls exactly this, but that option just isn’t there on the Icons-Only version.
It’s been like that for as long as I can remember. Running, but not pinned apps have always been to the far right for me.

if you want to drag it among pinned apps, then it has to be pinned.

you can choose which end you want the new (unpinned) tasks to appear when you launch them, but they will all stay to that end.
But shouldn’t we have the choice? Just like in the regular task manager, they can disable/enable the “keep launcher separate.”
What you want is is a new feature/option to be added to Icons-Only Task Manager configuration > behavior window to allow unpinned apps/windows/tasks icons to be placed among the pinned ones, which are displayed as a separate group currently.
This means the position of each such unpinned item (exactly where it should be inside the group of pinned items) should be remembered so that it will appear there each item it’s launched, and disappear wehenever it’s closed, creating some animation there all the time.
You can, of course, make such a new feature request at bugs.kde.org under the category “wish list”).
I guess, many users, including me, wouldn’t prefer this, but wouldn’t object either as long as it is just an option to be used or not to used.
It’s then up to the developers to judge the pros and cons of this, and decide accordingly.
