How can I insert images that span different lengths? also have video between the images? when I insert a sequence it wants to play all images and for the same duration.

Hi, and welcome to the forum and community.
Add images as clips to the bin, then put them to the timeline individually, adjusting their length as needed and with space between them for the videos. An Image Sequence loads the images essentially as one clip with a fixed duration for each image and a fixed transition between them.
thanks, dropping the files in the bin works. strangely, if I right-click in the bin there is no menu to add a single image. if I try to add a clip, images are not allowed.
Does “add clip or folder”, in the right click context menu (or in the drop down or main menu etc. etc.) not work for you? It should … What kind of images are you trying to add?
