Impossible to share a video for troubleshooting

Forum has gone criminally insane with overzealous administration

I took a video using KDE Spectacle because I need help with something.

The forum complains about it not being one of their accepted formats – even though it was taken with literal KDE software

Then I upload the video to youtube, and attach the link, and it rejects my post because I can’t include links?

What the hell is going on with this place? This is ridiculous

You know those videos or posts people make when they are newbies trying Linux and say things that are simple have been made WAY too complicated? This is the pinnacle of such a thing. You guys are literally enforcing limitations on your own SUPPORT FORUM? Bizarre

There are a few things at play here.

  1. Video content takes a lot of space and resources, so it is not unusual for a forum to restrict this usage.
  2. Links are restricted to new users until they have had a few posts. I am not sure of the number used here, maybe three? That is the value used on other forums I either moderate or am a member of. The problem is the flood of spambot content. The restriction on posting links mostly eliminates this.
  3. This is a community and volunteer-run forum, which means that there may not be all that many admins or mods at any given time, This makes some of these restrictions a bit more necessary, in my opinion.

Having said that, the different forum platform software available sure could make the messaging more informative when restrictions are in effect and mentioning them when someone posts a link. The old SMF version we used to use on Kubuntu Forums years would let you know how many posts you still needed to be able to add URLs. The Software we use now does not, and since none of us are PHP hackers, we never did figure out a good clear way to do this.

Now, the common workaround is to break up the URL, Like this:
youtu DOT be slash xvFZjo5PgG0 or something similar.

Another option is to vent comment here and there a couple more times to unlock the option

Ah, I misunderstood…

You have to gain ‘Trust’ before you can do certain things in Discourse - so if you’re a TL1, then you can’t post links.

What you can do is fix them like this: https : //youtu.be/E4WlUXrJgy4

Solving this would be as simple as asking OP what format the video is trying to load is in: webm? mp4? The one just needs to convert it with any online file converter found with Google.

Regarding the link, @claydoh gave a useful answer:

Also, the right category for this thread is “Help”, not “Community”.
