Is bootc being considered as a delivery mechanism for KDE Linux?

TL;DR: is KDE Linux considering bootc also as a delivery mechanism for OS updates or will it have its own thing?

Just wanted to ask this since bootc is gaining traction with stuff like bootcrew creating experimental bootc images based on Arch, OpenSUSE, Debian etc. And after reading Jorge Castro’s blog post on the topic it seems more and more people are turning to containers (and bootc) to do stuff and things.

GNOME also seems to be going in that direction kinda (see part about Dakotaraptor).

Another cool thing about bootc is that it would allow technical people to make their own changes to (for example) KDE Linux. Making new images and distributions, maybe tailored for something like gaming.

I find this whole thing really exciting, but I fear fragmentation is already happening in this space, with KDE Linux (I don’t really know how different from bootc its update mechanism is), VanillaOS, etc. and well, bootc.

So far we have not considered it. There are many approaches to building immutable OSs and then re-adding some amount of mutability to them, all with their own pros and cons.

I’m not 100% confident that our approach is best. But I’m also not 100% confident that switching to something else would be better, or at least better enough to offset the amount of work that would go into it.
