There should be a shortcut or key to move video or audio tracks. If I want to move a track higher or lower than the others, it shouldn’t be so complicated. The problem is, I can’t find that feature. I’ve tried holding down Shift or Control, and nothing works. It’s a shame this isn’t so easy; it should be a fundamental feature in the editor. If someone could explain it to me, I’d appreciate it.
It would be great if a right-click option appeared to move the selected track up or down; this is essential. Here’s an example image without the track movement menu.
This feature is indeed not implemented. AFAIK, it has - among other things - to do with the internal model used for clip handling. So, it is a bit more complicated than you might think.
Of course, if you know how to implement that you are welcome to take a jab at it …
It’s also completely unclear what you should do with any multi-track transitions that would effect, because kind of by definition they cannot be perfectly preserved if you start just arbitrarily changing the track order. So it’s more than just ‘tricky to implement’, some aspects of it are Logically Impossible, and offering it anyway would be a giant footgun resulting in horrified users reporting “All I did was move one track and now my whole project is totally trashed! I’ve lots days of work!!”
Determining your track order is one of those things like the project parameters, that you kind of need to determine before you start filling them with content, and one that you’ll probably need some experience to ‘always’ get right from the outset - but it should be something you find yourself doing less and less as your experience grows.
But for those times when you do find yourself painted into a corner you’d like to get out of, you can always add and remove tracks anywhere, and you can always group-select, and cut/copy and paste exactly what you want to move to where you want to move it. Which lets you decide how to resolve the things that are otherwise ‘impossible’ to just move without making their operation ‘different’ at best, ‘nonsensical’ at worst.
