When I save a file in the file picker there’s a checkbox that will automatically add the right extension if I rename the file. However this checkbox is turned off when I try to save an .mp4 file and I can’t interact with it, so it won’t add the extension automatically. This only seems to be happening with .mp4 specifically. This doesn’t seem to be an issue with Firefox as I’ve found it’s also happening in the Helium browser (Chromium) and Discord. I am using CachyOS.

Yes, indeed, that is what happens but the extension is still there. As you can see in the filename you have the .mp4 at the end, that is the extension. I have tested it myself and I got an .mp4 video file just as expected.
Frankly, I have never used the Automatically select filename extension myself since the filename has the extension already.
When I rename my files I use ctrl + A to delete everything (including the extension) before I start typing. I do this for 2 reasons:
- changing folders will lose the highlight that appears in the filename when you first try to save a file. So if you change a folder and start typing to rename the file nothing will happen. Double clicking the filename after this happens will select everything before the extension, however again I would rather ctrl + a to wipe everything for the following reason:
- I like numbering the files I save (i.e. apple2.png, apple3.png, etc) on windows for example if you start rename the file a dropdown will appear in the textbox that automatically shows files that have the same name as what you’re trying to type. The KDE dialogue portal also has this feature but it will only appear (and AFAIK there is no other way to trigger this) when you delete the filename including the file extension of whatever you’re trying to save. So that’s where that checkbox comes in handy for me, because it will automatically add the extension at the end.
Then KRename - KDE Applications might be exactly what you need cause it has this as an option
