Kate v26 won't launch on macOS Tahoe 26.4

Running an M2 Mac Studio with 32GB ram. The new v26 tries to launch but immediately quits without even providing an error dialog to assist troubleshooting. The nightly build seems to have the same problem. I normally prefer installing via homebrew but manually downloading the .dmg presented the same symptom. If anyone can tell me where Kate writes log files on macOS (nothing obvious in Console.app and nothing useful found in my DDG search) I’d be happy to provide log info.

The previous v25 works perfectly, so I just downgraded for now. If anyone has anything to suggest, thanks in advance!

Indeed, same here with “macOS Tahoe 26.4.1 (25E253) arm64”, I have no idea where the kate logs are but once tried to run kate from tty I got:

SingleApplication: Unable to create block.
SingleApplication: QSharedMemory::KeyError “QSharedMemory::attach (shm_open): bad name”

I don’t wanna install Rosetta on M1 Air for now, and don’t wanna build from source, moved to another app for now this to be fixed. I would suggest adding a bug tag would be better in this case. I found a version for Intel (uptodown mirror) which is asking for Rosetta, just wondering where you have found a silicon version of v25, if you can and able to share a link that would be much appricated! Thanks in advance

Is a Qt issue that will be fixed upstream

Same problem here. I just got my new Macbook last week, so naturally I had to download Kate as one of my first apps. (Been a loyal Kate user since 2001.) Unfortunately I don’t know how to build it from source on MacOS. Any advice on how to get it working would be appreciated. Thanks!

As thehalflings stated at the top of this thread, a workaround is just to install v25. That’s what I did and so I’m good for now.

Just adding a “me too” here. Was forced by my employer to upgrade to Tahoe and it bricked my Kate install, have the same issue as others in this thread have mentioned.

If anyone can point me to a v25 download (I installed it via brew), that’d be great. Otherwise I’ll just wait for the bug fix. Is there a link anywhere or maybe we can report the bug?

FWIW, I found the bug report: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=519862

They won’t let me provide a working url for some reason, so you’ll have to remove the 2 spaces I inserted to piece it back together:
