KDE Connect SMS not working (at all) on System76/Ubuntu desktop

I want to connect my System76/Ubuntu desktop to my iPhone 17. I have Kdeconnect installed on the cell phone, and I see a connection. I can ping, ring, move cursor, send files - all working.

On the laptop, however, things are hopeless. Here is what I have tried:

Scenario 1: I installed KDEConnect, which gave me three apps: KdeConnect itself, KDEXMX, and KDEliveness (or something).

At first, I saw the connection to the phone described above. When I clicked KDESMS, I saw another connection (why 2 to the same phone? different protocols?) It said Loading SMS Messages. After an hour, the SMS connection went dead - went into “previous connections” and never returned, nor was I able to restore it by any means. Eventually, all connections disappeared from the GUI on the laptop completely.

Scenario 2. I decided to try GSConnect, since I am using the Gnome desktop, it made sense that KDE stuff would not work well. GSConnect requires a bunch of plugins, and to uninstall KDE Connect, which I did.

Results: same. I still see the phone connected on the same port and IP, and still can ping, ring, etc.

The GSConnect app doesn’t open at all. I should be at least notified of messages, but nothing.

What a mess! Can this even work? Can someone provide current, working steps?

Thank you!
