Basic information:
Nixos 23.05
Plasma 5.27.7
Wayland
Pulseaudio
The device is a laptop with speakers and a headphone jack. An external display that has speakers is connected with a HDMI cable.

I had issues with a game not being able to output any sounds. I went in to KDE settings and started trying all different kinds of combinations with audio output devices. When I set my laptop’s internal audio output device to “Stereo input” (I think), it disappeared completely. It is not in the input devices. My HDMI output also disappeared.

Running the following brought back my HDMI output which works but it has a different name now: “pulseaudio -k”
Game for some reason is only able to output audio on this laptop’s headphone jack.

The menu’s are very different everywhere as well.

In game sound device settings choices (Dota 2):
-Default device (doesn’t work. KDE has only HDMI output.)
-HD-Audio Generic, [namehere] Analog (this one is the only one that works and is the headphone jack)
-HDA NVidia, HDMI 3
-HDA NVidia, HDMI 2
-HDA NVidia, HDMI 1
-HDA NVidia, HDMI 0

Choices in plasma audio menu:
-HDMI / DisplayPort - Profile: Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output (this works fine but the menu is completely missing HD-audio Generic)

Choices in alsamixer command line utility:
-HDA NVidia
-HD-Audio Generic

There seems to be some kind of disconnect somewhere. The game is looking at hardware and somehow finding extra HDA’s, none of which work.
Plasma seems to have found some kind of HDA Nvidia card but is completely missing HD-audio Generics.
Alsamixer finds the correct devices.

Things that I have tried:
-Rebooting pc
-Disconnecting and connecting headphones
-Removing ~/.config/pulse and running pulseaudio -k (this brought back the HDMI output)

My guess would be that I have flagged my output device as an input device in the KDE menu but that device is nowhere to be found in input devices and is now stuck in some kind of limbo. Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Thank you for all the help in advance.

My audio output has gone as well, all of a sudden. It used to work fine for years, now something happened.

We will need to report this as a bug, but maybe before we do that, we can gather some more user reports here.

Try upgrading pipewire to 0.3.85 or latest 1.0.0, some HDMI bugs were fixed in latest versions.

Same thing here, although I’m just starting with Linux so Ive been trying on virtual machines. I thought the issue would be related but apparently its not. Every audio device i try doesn’t work.

Kind of an old thread but since no one posted a solution here it goes:
Same thing happened to me when I changed my Playback Device profile from “Analog Stereo Duplex” to "Analog Stereo Output ".
I fixed the problem by changing the Recording Device profile to “Analog Stereo Duplex” since there was no Playback device, after that the Playback Device reappeared.

I’m facing the same issue on **Plasma 6.5 KDE Neon**. There is no **Speakers** output while **HDMI** is plugged.

**Speakers** only appear when **HDMI** is unplugged.

There is nothing about **duplex** in **pavucontrol**. Just **HDMI** , **Port audio** and **Disabled**. Thats all.

That is usually not an option on a graphic card audio, or at least I personally never seen it there, but on a (motherboard) sound card that also has a microphone input.
For me “Analog Stereo Output” would be my laptop internal speakers/old style headphone and “…Duplex” handle speakers/headphone **and** microphone while “…Output” (only) would turn the microphone unavailable, likewise “…Input” would turn the output of that sound card unavailable.
So it may depend on your hardware.
And from the screenshots here it looks to me that if you do not have a dedicated graphic card (which I always had) things can also get mixed together.

This is what it looks like for me in the sound section of the settings (german language):

but it should also in English called “Profile:” on the right side of the settings.

It was there just after install of Fedora KDE-Plasma. My Vega 56 card also played sound effortlessly for a weekend directly after install. It showed up in the Settings sound. Than I did an Fedora upgrade and/or I accidently select Pro Audio. After that the audio device was gone in the Settings. Deepseek eventually found out that the ALSA device was there but Pipewire or Wireplumber lost the settings. I never got it back so I removed the GPU and use the IGFX with sound of HDMI without a problem. But unfortunately the IGFX only does 30Hz on 4k.

Audio on Linux still is silly after all these years.

Looks like this for me. Or am I looking in the wrong place?

This is what it looks for me on Breeze dark Plasma 6.6.2 (and before), switched to a user set to English:

 ![image](https://discuss-cdn.kde.org/uploads/default/original/3X/4/0/40d19d5c90d3a3775d4c119f44c333ced8bf0f43.png)

It clearly says “Profile:” in front of the selection Box, don’t know.
My “HDMI-Displayport Audio” is a virtual device I configured manually, you can ignore that.

Regardless, if your “Recording Device” also has its own sound output it should probably not be set to “Analog Stereo Input” but “… Duplex” like I have because if I set mine to “…Input” my “Build-in Audio Analog Stereo” disappears completely and does not work anymore.

But like I said depending on the Hardware, HDMI “AD106M…” aka “Nvidia graphics card” is in my case a output only separate from Build-in, things may be slightly different (not the missing “Profile:” text, though).
