KDE Linux 06-12-2026 does not load desktop icons, panels and cannot create new panels

I’ve just updated KDE Linux from version 06-06-2026 to 06-12-2026 and it refuses to load or create icons and desktop panels but creating widgets is still possible. I also can’t click and drag select anything. I didn’t update Flatpaks or system packages prior to upgrading since I updated manually through the console.

I also recorded a video using Spectacle demonstrating what I can and can’t do on the newest version but I’m not sure if I can post or share it here.

Now I’m looking for guidance on how to restore my panels and icons. Thanks in advance.

Plasma is currently 6.6.5 which was released on 5-12-26. Unless you’re running the beta you should be on that depending on you distro. Now your distro may have done a major update and with it updated whichever version of Plasma they’re using. In that case it would be the distro that caused whatever issue you are having.

KDE Linux is still in alpha status, and ships the dev version of Plasma 6.8.

So a slightly bumpy ride is to be expected (though I’ve actually been surprised by how daily-drivable KDE Linux is).

I would suggest:

  1. Boot back into the previous image
  2. Edit - sounds like no need to raise a bug report, since the issue is known and in hand like @stlnb said.

This is a known issue, already fixed in plasma-desktop (Port to new import for Panel enum (!3818) · Merge requests · Plasma / Plasma Desktop · GitLab) and the next build should be working as expected.

Before then, as PG said, boot into the previous image (instructions here).

FWIW, our in-development QA system caught the issue, so in the near future once that system is rolled out, such issues won’t be released to users.
