Kde Neon Plasma 6.4 will not wake up from sleep mode

Test driving by simply disabling hibernation.

So far, so good.

Will keep on testing.

After more than a day of regular usage…
Feels like removing hibernation has resolved the issue.
Thanks to @skyfishgoo for indirectly helping to fix this!

Do have one small question tho.
Swap just now is at zero:

Earlier, while viewing videos on a website, it showed 2.4G/512M
Even now, with a new tab opened to Ytube loaded with all kinds of videos, it shows ok/512M

Posted and tested via Brave browser instead of Firefox this time.

Update: spoke too fast (again!); after set to sleep mode less than 2 hours ago, it would not come back. Ugh!

i wouldn’t worry about it, you are only using 2.7GB of your ram so there is no need to use swap.

that half gig is just there to give your system a chance to start killing things in ram to make room if need be… it’s not really meant to be a swap space for uses like hibernation.

Tried to manually install KDE Neon Plasma 6.4 on allocated space as usual.
But for some reason, couldn’t get it to install.
(dual boot with Win11 on desktop).

So, decided to take Mint Cinnamon out for a spin.
It did just as expected with automatic install.
Here are system resource usage (with Firefox open to Ytube):

Notice o bytes usage out of 2.1GB it automatically assigned?

p.s. already missing KDE Neon…

mint cinnamon is orders of magnitude better than neon.

kubuntu LTS is better than cinnamon (imho) but it will only give you 512M of swap unless you take other action to create a swap partition or create as swap file.

Kubuntu might be better, but snaps is not my cup of tea.

Here is fresh automatic install of KDE Neon 6.4 with only two tabs open in Firefox (one with Ytube videos):

Swap is odd with its never seen before ā€œOK/OKā€!

I’ve had to turn off sleeping on my KDE neon laptop because it just wasn’t reliable at waking up and resuming reliably. I acknowledge that this is just one of the weak spots of FOSS operating systems and is something that I have witnessed over a decade now. I mean it’s great if a laptop has perfect drivers and the entire OS stack is working 100% perfectly during suspend/resume, but I don’t expect it.

Thanks!
It’s good not to feel alone.

KDE Neon has made some huge strides over the past year.
Have had other issues, but this latest quirk came as a surprise.

Having to shutdown/reboot with an SSD is nothing compared to what it used to be.

Remember the days of Win 98 (1st ed.) that took forever to load, and oftentimes, only properly after a second or third attempt.

Funny… this a.m., after 1 1/2 hours of sleep mode, desktop came back to life!

Just another fluke?

0K/0K, just means neon did not set up ANY swap at all … which is bad practice

Oh… it’s a first for me.

Regardless, have been in and out for work today.
Sleep mode has been flawless so far.

If that is the benefit of OK/OK, then hey!
I’m OK with that!

CPU almost idle with Vivaldi open.
4Gs of RAM taken over 8G.

Will see how it fares tomorrow…

zero K / zero K as in NO swap used / NO swap available to use.

you want to have swap, esp with only 8GB of ram.

it was probably the zram that was hosing things up, trying to write over itself during suspend to ram.

Just weird to see KDE Neon do two different automatic installs with Plasma 6.4

If at present, it don’t crash, freeze up or whatever, and sleep mode always works - then maybe leaving it as is won’t hurt?

i would still set up a swapfile at least.

Looks like i managed to create Swap partition.
Followed this lead:

If sleep mode no longer works…

you should be good to go.

if you want to get hibernation working there are few more things you would need to do, but if you are happy with only sleeping, then there you go.

just remember if there is a power failure and you have any unsaved work, that work will be lost… might want to consider a UPS between your PC and the wall.

So far, so good!

Find Igor’s (Dedoimedo) rant quite good:

Odd that he doesn’t talk about the 0 Swap (per his screenshot) on his test drive.

He claims having GPU usage.
Mine has zero problems there.

Which leads me to wonder if KDE Neon 6.4 has some serious issues with its automatic install option.

his reviews are what originally drew me to KDE in the first place when i was looking to abandon windows.

he’s been correct on so many things, i have to trust that this (rather harsh) review is intended to improve the offering, and i agree with the parts that i’ve encountered:

  • the annoying system update reboot cycle
  • floating panels by default
  • wayland not being ready for prime time yet
  • firefox icons coming and going

happily being productive on plasma 5 without any of this nonsense until it all gets sorted.

Have marked a solution to this thread.

Can’t say it is 100% resolved, but it works as expected now.

Close enough.

Future installs will confirm.

Okay guys…

To be honest, all the recent problems I’ve posted here (about KDE Neon 6 etc.), have been resolved with going over to SpiralLinux.

Not saying this lightly.
