KDE Plasma 6.6 DEV [KDE Linux (202509230450)] - Wake-up from sleep the display comes up on an unlocked mess

SUMMARY
I have been a long time KDE and KUbuntu user, and love the products. I learned about “Project Banana” on Hackaday, and just had to try it out. Overall very impressive, but it’s taking a bit of time to get used to things like trying, and failing to install “Joe’s Own editor” (yet), which has been my go-to SU editor for decades.

The Problem:

When waking up from sleep mode (login required, or not), the display comes up blank, and requires the “Esc” key to bring up the display, which is in an unlocked mode, and appears to be a resolution not available for the display. Sometimes, I am able to press the power button for normal shutdown, and press “Enter” to get past the timeout, and the system shuts down normally. Other times, after pressing the power button, and “Enter” a different screen appears, and nothing helps from there, except to do a hard power down.

I have narrowed the issue down to the system not returning to the original resolution and/or refresh rate when waking from sleep mode. I do not have this issue with this system, using an identiclal 500GB SATA SSD, with KUbuntu 25.04 LTS on X11. I would think that a settings file would have the current display resoloution and refresh rate, and return to that. The LCD resolution on my laptop is 1366x768 60.0Hz. I have experienced display issues with Wayland (primarily KVM switching) on other systems, including KUbuntu 24.04 LTS, as well as Raspberry Pi OS, and have set them both to X11. Given my past issues with Wayland, I wonder if my current issue is related to Wayland rather than KDE Linux.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE

  1. Close laptop lid to enter sleep mode.
  2. Wait for OS to enter sleep state.
  3. Open lid to wake up from sleep mode.

OBSERVED RESULT
Screen is black (with backlight on) until “Esc” key is pressed, then the screen is screwed up.

EXPECTED RESULT
Login screen, or last desktop and window before entering sleep mode.

This seems possible.

The log info you posted isn’t from KDE Linux, is it? I see lots of mentions of Xorg, but KDE Linux is Wayland-only.

The log is from the KDE Plasma Linux 6.6 DEV as is indicated in the title. Wayland still has parts of “X11” for backwards compatibility with some software that relies on it. The command: “$> journalctl -b | grep -i 'wayland.*]: ‘ “ is included at the beginning of the log to indicate the log being listed.

Tomorrow, I will recreate the problem, and take a closer look at the log. I am expecting a new ASUS laptop on Thursday, and will give KDE Linux a try there as well. It is a much newer design, with a 1920x1080 144Hz display. I’ll add my findings to this report on both laptops.

I just remembered that my new laptop has an NVidia GPU, and is not supported as of yet, due to copyrights. So, I will try KUbuntu with Wayland on both laptops to see if the issue follows Wayland.

I’m having the exact same issue, only on my desktop. Screen looks exactly like the picture posted above upon every wake-up.

To solve it, I can physically unplug the monitor, wait a couple seconds, and replug it. That corrects the display. But that’s super annoying every time it sleeps.

I’ll be following this thread to see if anyone comes up with a solution.

After some failed attempts, I finally got an image of KUbuntu 25.10 that would boot. I haven’t done a full install yet, but I put the system to sleep while booted to the USB stick, and it came out of sleep properly on the old laptop. This may indicate that an interface between the kernel and Wayland. As expected, Kubuntu 25.10 booted, but did not display anything on my new laptop, due to the nVidia GPU. I certainly hope this is resolved soon, as I look forward to running KDE Linux with Wayland on my new laptop.

Lets try that again. I tried to edit my post, but apparently, for some reason, there is a time limit. Below is what I wanted to post:

After some failed attempts, I finally got an image of KUbuntu 25.10 that would boot. I haven’t done a full install yet, but I put the old laptop to sleep while booted to the USB stick, and it came out of sleep properly on the old laptop. This may indicate an interface issue between the kernel and Wayland on KDE Linux.

As expected, Kubuntu 25.10 booted, but did not display anything on my new laptop, due to the nVidia GPU. I certainly hope this is resolved soon, as I look forward to running KDE Linux with Wayland on my new laptop. With all the nVidia GPU’s out there, this issue is a MUST FIX.
