Kdenli̇ve - capcut vs fi̇lmora

Hello Kdenlive team,

First of all, I would like to sincerely thank you for developing such a powerful and open-source video editing software. Kdenlive is an incredibly valuable project for the open-source community, and many users, including myself, truly appreciate your hard work and dedication.

Kdenlive already offers impressive professional features. However, I believe some improvements to the user experience could help the software reach a much wider audience.

For beginners especially, Kdenlive can sometimes feel a bit complex. In this regard, I think taking inspiration from user-friendly editors such as CapCut and Filmora could greatly improve accessibility and ease of use.

For example, it would be amazing to see more:

  • Ready-to-use video effects

  • Built-in transition packs

  • Animated text presets

  • Stickers and motion graphic elements

  • Drag-and-drop simplicity

  • A cleaner and more modern interface

Features similar to CapCut would especially make a big difference, such as:

  • one-click effects,

  • social-media-oriented templates,

  • quick transition presets,

  • modern text animations and effects.

Many users would love to see a version of Kdenlive that keeps its professional power while also becoming easier, faster, and more intuitive for casual creators and beginners.

Thank you again for all your efforts and contributions to the open-source world. Your work is deeply appreciated.

Best regards.

Hi @dyjnbyhd_dyjnbyhd, and welcome to the forum and community.

Can you be a bit more specific? All effects in Kdenlive are provided by the libraries of frei0r and avfilter (ffmpeg), and are “ready to use”. You can save presets or variants of the effects for easy access, and users can share and exchange effects via the KDE Store.

Built-in transition packs

Can you be more specific about what you expect from that? Version 26.04 introduced transition/composition previews. Kdenlive has always supported drag-and-drop for effects and compositions/transitions.

Animated text presets

That’s a valid request but unless someone starts working on the title editor and how titles are handled internally, or donations are coming in to contract out that kind of work, nothing is happening in this department due to different priorities. Glaxnimate could help in this respect, though.

Stickers and motion graphic elements

Again, this is a generic statement and would need more fleshing out to be actionable. The integration of Glaxnimate can certainly help with the motion graphics elements but need a bigger community that is willing to share stuff they are producing.

Drag-and-drop simplicity

Please be more specific what drag-and-drop functions you are missing.

A cleaner and more modern interface

This is a very subjective thing. There are many users out there praising the UI, so we must have done something right

Again, please be much more specific in this department. Create a mock up of the UI changes you would make, describe what is not working well with the UI and what in your opinion should change and (most importantly) how.

Features similar to CapCut would especially make a big difference

Firstly, Kdenlive doesn’t want to be yet another CapCut clone. Secondly, the things you mentioned may not be available with just one click, but it also doesn’t take dozens more to use them. Granted, text handling has a lot of room for improvement but see my statement above.

Many users would love to see a version of Kdenlive that keeps its professional power while also becoming easier, faster, and more intuitive for casual creators and beginners.

Interesting. Have you done a poll recently you can share?

Thank you again for all your efforts and contributions to the open-source world. Your work is deeply appreciated.

Thank you for your kind words.

yes.. with the IA stuff outside.. soon or later all that social softwares for people that have no time to learn anything will disappear… and Kdenlive / premiere / davinci … will be here for decades for who want to make professional things.
