Kdenlive "Monitor for fullscreen output" setting is never respected

There is a Setting in Configure Kdenlive > Playback named “Monitor for fullscreen output”.

I have a multi monitor setup and it seems random. It spawns on a different monitor each time (preview monitor window is underneath the Kdenlive window). I always need to execute the DE’s overview setting and move the monitor Kdenlive window to another monitor.

Due to the fact that I had this issue for years on two different Linux DE’s, I am now making this post here. The issue happened to me both on GNOME as well as on COSMIC.

I would assume that the intention behind this option is to define a monitor where the output window will always “spawn”. But for me, that’s not the case. The setting is useless because I need to configure it manually for each Kdenlive Boot.

Can someone reply if this has worked for their Linux Setups?

Thanks!

that “Monitor for fullscreen output” option has been flaky for years for me too. kdenlive often just follows whichever screen the main window is on, then the clip monitor lands under it.

what usually sticks better:

  1. undock the clip/project monitor, drag it to the second screen, then go fullscreen from there
  2. set the monitor in Configure Kdenlive → Playback, then fully quit and reopen kdenlive once (apply alone often does nothing)
  3. if youre on wayland, try launching once with QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb and see if the spawn sticks

paste kdenlive version plus wayland/x11 if it still jumps after that.
