Keep a single Dolphin window, opening new folders in tabs

The settings item for this (Opening Folders) is wordy and misleading.

Test it out:

  • Starting with a blank screen, you can use your Plasma or krunner to open a folder - or just open with META_E.

You should start with just ONE tab - go with the home folder. (if sessions are enabled, just close it and start with your Home).

Now if you want to look at ‘Places’ item (Audio, or Desktop) you can go to the taskbar, or menu, or krunner.

That new folder will be opened up in a new tab in your existing Dolphin window which should also come to the front. If you go to another desktop, opening a new tab won’t bring dolphin to you, it’ll take you to dolphin… so you can either pull it off and relocate it to your working desktop or disable the setting.

Great.

Now open another dolphin window - let’s use Shift_Enter to open a folder. I now have TWO dolphin windows… the other one I’ll use on desktop 4.

Now plasma will open the Plasma Places item in whichever window is present on Desktop 1 or 4.

If I now drag Firefox down to desktop 3, and open a new Places item, I will be dragged to another Dolphin window.

So the statement about ‘Keep a single window’ is confusing - and I actually kept this disabled, because I often want to have separate windows for separate contexts.

Now I was faced with a bug in my forum, I discovered that the label is misleading.

Disabling this option simply allows ‘Open Places in new windows as opposed to new tabs’.

This seems simplistic, and I’m sure I’ve got it wrong somehow - but for sure it’s a little messed up logically… how to express it properly in English… because it doesn’t apply to opening a folder by clicking it in Dolphin, that replaces the current view.

What’s frustrating is that it also resumes the session - pulling up a mirror of the already existing window (with it’s 4 tabs) and adds another one.

But surely this option isn’t a Dolphin oriented setting, but a Plasma (Behaviour) when opening from Desktop or Plasmoid or something…
