Hi !
I have created a test “BargeldTest” account of type Cash, and entered an expense of 300.- with a category (in my case the category is an expense category called “Activités récréatives”).
In the Ledger view, this correctly shows as an expense, and in the accounts view it correctly shows a deficit. However, when I go to the category view, it shows it as an income, but I don’t understand why (as illustrated below).
When I open the category (double click to open in the ledger view), I see my transaction where it still shows that it is an expense of 300.-
However, on the bottom right it also shows that it is of type income (“Recette” in french, see below)
Why is that the case ? Do I not correctly understand how KMyMoney is supposed to work ?
For context, I also have another account of type “Liability” called “À payer” where I keep track of what money I owe whom, and all the expenses there appear as expenses inside the correct categories.
Do I not understand how KMyMoney works, or do I fundamentally not understand how accounting works ? (I am very new to this, never did accounting in my life except for personal expenses)
One could also go on and see other “strange” things: the single expense amounts are shown as positive numbers (in my example 70, 58, 61, 11.90), and so is the balance at the end of each row BUT the total balance on the bottom right is shown as a negative amount
If I understood you properly, my answer to your question:
Do not worry, your numbers are correct and the “recette” you see… can be ignored if it disturbs you.
you can disable this transaction mask in the settings. Untick “afficher le formulaire d’opération”
This is what I do since the ledger already show all the transactions’ details. This bottom form doesn’t bring me anything more, it is for me a duplicate information.
to explain you more the “recette”, this wording is not wrong if you virtually consider your expense as an independent wallet exchanging money with other wallets (in your case the bargeld account). From the perspective of the category “activités récréatives”, the 300 CHF are a gain, not an expense.
Of course it can be misleading because the ultimate reference is the real person owning the money, you, and not a single accounting category.
Yes it helps, since it is an expense, it should be a positive number in the “expense” category, and that’s why it shows “Recette”. The wording and coloring is just a bit confusing, but I’ll happily just hide it just like you suggest. Thank you !
