Konsole history length

I have been using konsole for years as my terminal window on linux, but I must admit that things have gone so well, that I have not been actively configuring it. Recently, I have been been having a problem with “history” command. But my real problem right now, is that the online konsole documentation that I found on “www.duckduckgo.com” does not match up with what I am seeing in my version of konsole on my PC.

I want to set the konsole “history” to unlimited. I went to duckduckgo and found what is include at the end of this document as “Duckduckgo Info”.

I found the “Settings” button as a button on the konsole window as one of the tabs. When I clicked on the “Settings” button a menu popped up. I went through the menu and all the sub-items in the menu, but I found nothing related to “history”, thus I could not change the history setting. I expected to find something in my profile, but no luck there.

Additionally, I went to “.config” directory in my home directory. I found “konsolerc” there. If memory serves me right, in the past, konsole settings could be set in the konsolerc file, but I found no history setting there.

So, I have two questions:

  1. How can I set the “history” in my current version of konsole (version 22.12.3)?

  2. Where do I find documentation for my current version of konsole?

Adjusting History Length in Konsole

To control the history length in a Konsole window, you can set it to a specific value or to unlimited. Follow these steps to adjust the settings:

Steps to Change History Size

  1. Open Konsole: Launch the Konsole application on your KDE Plasma desktop.

  2. Access Settings: Navigate to the settings menu. This is typically found under the “Edit” menu or by right-clicking in the terminal window.

  3. Locate History Settings: Look for an option related to history size. This may be labeled as “History” or “Terminal History.”

  4. Set History Size:

    • To set a specific limit, enter the desired number (e.g., 99999).
    • To set it to unlimited, select the option for unlimited history.
  5. Save Changes: Make sure to apply or save your changes before exiting the settings menu

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

(1) History is in the profile settings, you’ll have to go to the settings then the Profiles pane and Edit a profile from there (if you only have the built-in one, create a new profile). It will then be in the Scrolling pane with what’s referred to as Scrollback in the latest versions (also 4 year old Konsole version, Debian or an LTS distro?)

(2) The official docs (which I got as the first result in DDG) are here. With the relevant page being Scrollback. Also latest but from 2024 (although to be fair, Konsole didn’t change all that much).

Sounds like this.

The history command is something that your shell controls, and Konsole has no role in it at all. Look up documentation on how to set history limits for your shell (Bash or Zsh or Fish as the case may be).

The closest concept Konsole has is the “scrollback”, which is how many lines of output you can scroll back to view in a single terminal session. That is controlled as stlnb described.

As for DDG, that sounds maybe like LLM output? Looks like it doesn’t have much info about Konsole in its training data. Better to refer to the Konsole manual.

For Bash you’ll want to edit your ~/.bashrc and add the HISTFILESIZE and/or HISTSIZE options. Generally setting them both to -1 for unlimited.

Yes, setting the value is the shell is the correct solution for me. Looking at konsole documentation was en error on my part. Thank you!
