Kontact (kmail) has all kinds of problems in a situation with bad internet

Hi everyone.

I live in a country with bad (spell: BAD) internet. Interruptions, slow, a lot of government control etc.

Now, kontact/kmail seems to have problems with that. When clicking on a new folder or email, it freezes for a couple of seconds.

Sending emails sometimes doesn’t work. It complains about that the sending agent hasn’t been set up (it has) or some similar stuff. Emails remain in the outbox for days. Sometimes a manual send works, sometimes not. Today I had to save 6 emails as draft, synchronize with Gmail and then send them from the Web interface. That works, though.

There are other problems as well, like kaddressbook insisting on synchronizing everything before displaying anything, which takes ages if you have an addressbook with ~2000 entries and a bad internet…

The internet connection here is not too bad to use the web interface (although sometimes even that doesn’t work), so I’m wondering why a local solution where you don’t have to load all the visual stuff, just the emails (or contact infos) doesn’t work while the web interface (which should hab a lot bigger overhead) does…

Oh, and akonadiconsole complains twice about a database problem (Failed to connect to database: driver not loaded), before it opens up normally…

Hi, sorry to read that you are having problems!

And thanks for your feedback and interest in KMail!

Not really a solution, but the old KMail generation (which I call Enterprise 3.5) before the switch to Akonadi works nicely offline. It is still somewhat maintained by trinitydesktop dot org - I know people that use it successfully each day. So maybe it is a workaround for your situation until the modern KMail get better in this regard.

Best,

Bernhard
