Kwin_wayland between 12 and 35% all the time

Hello,

I am driving a Fedora 40 KDE and my PC is somehow sluggish and it looks like the main reason is kwin_wayland never going below 12% CPU and actually spending its time around 20-30% (climbing to 44% while I type)…

It’s a AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D 8-Core, it shouldn’t struggle like that to manage an idle desktop…

Any idea? Anyone with the same kind of issue?

KDE Crashed, not nicely. The good news is kwin_wayland jumped right back to it’s usual 25% of CPU. So at this point it’s probably more a feature than a bug.

Does this have / your system use a iGPU?
Also noticed a “unusual” higher CPU usage then what I was used to from X11, but with a Intel CPU.
And, at least in my case, figured out that when I for example have nothing else open than my browser and switch that from the iGPU to the dGPU suddenly the CPU usage (I have the widget for that open all the time) drops to “unspectacular”. Seems to me that for some reason the integrated GPU counts to CPU usage but not sure why on X11 that was different.

I was typing an answer  Yes, it has a iGPU, the so called Raphael but for this time it was not the culprit.

The issue was that I was using the Nvidia driver 55. For some reason this driver was not loaded correctly on the newest Kernel. I was basically running the whole desktop in software rendering mode hence my CPU doing the job while my RTX4090 was idle by the side.

Moving from the 55 to the 60 totally solved the issue. The kwin-wayland even when my screen is very busy is now between 0.1% and 0.3%.
A very well behaved process if there was any.
