Libre Kambio — Qt/PySide6 multi-currency converter tested on Plasma/Wayland

Hi,

I’d like to share a Linux desktop application I’ve been working on called Libre Kambio.

Libre Kambio is an open-source multi-currency converter built with Qt/PySide6 and packaged as a Flatpak. My main development and testing environment is KDE Plasma on Fedora Wayland.

The idea is to make currency conversion useful as a desktop tool rather than just reproduce a simple two-currency web converter.

You enter an amount once and can immediately see the conversion across multiple currencies. The interface also lets you create custom groups, reorder currencies, control visibility and choose any supported currency as the base.

Libre Kambio currently supports 65 currencies and uses:

  • European Central Bank reference data as its primary source
  • Bank of Russia official exchange-rate data for additional currencies and cross-checking
  • Official USD pegs for selected currencies
  • Optional official sources from several Latin American central banks

The application also exposes source information, publication dates and independent cross-check results instead of hiding how each value was obtained.

I design and direct the functionality, behaviour, interface and overall direction of the application. Generative AI is used as a development assistant for implementation, testing, code review and documentation, and I manually test and maintain the project.

It is currently tested on Fedora KDE Plasma / Wayland, so feedback from other Plasma users would be particularly useful.

Feedback, usability suggestions and testing on other systems are very welcome.
