After updating my Kernel to 7.2.2 my login screen appears but after completing my password I get a blank screen and system freezes. This new.
What is your distro ?
Did you reboot ?
Yes I did reboot and tried several times. On one reboot I logged in as Gnome and was successful then tried KDE withe the same as earlier results.
I am using EndeavourOS Titan.
Operating System: EndeavourOS
KDE Plasma Version: 6.7.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.29.0
Qt Version: 6.11.2
Kernel Version: 6.18.49-2-lts (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 32 × AMD Ryzen 9 5950X 16-Core Processor
Memory: 128 GiB of RAM (125.7 GiB usable)
Graphics Processor: AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT
Manufacturer: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd.
Product Name: MS-7D54
System Version: 2.0
The black screen is plasmashell not starting or crashing.
To see the crash output:
codedumpctl info plasmashell
It is best to use codedumpctl gdb plasmashell it will download a bunch of files so the crash trace is informative, otherwise it is just vague.
Looking at the log, could be useful too:
journalctl -u plasmashell.service -b
Thanks for the info. I have solved the issue by starting the system in X11 and examining the differences to Wayland (I was guessing it was a graphics issue) and it turned out to being a refresh rate issue. I have been a Windows technician for 30+ years and Linux is new to me (only being a user for about 12 months and loving it.) I have to get better at the shell.
Cheers
Drivers don’t easily tell whether a particular refresh rate/resolution is really supported.
If you still had a cursor that’s plasmashell, if nothing is responding that’s kwin (the compositor) that failed to start.
Thanks for the info, good to know.
